Show A NEW COURT. A friend, noted for his wisdom, has a plan for settling labor troubles which is worth serious trought. It has many details, but the central idea is that Congress, or the individual states, should establish a special court to hear and determine differences between employers and employees, and that the decrees of thte court should be backed by all the power of the state or nation. That strikes, as now conducted, should be declared de-clared unlawful, but when employees or employers em-ployers are aggrieved they should make a statement state-ment of their grievances, followed with a petition peti-tion for redress. That when such a petition is filed, the court shall immediately proceed to investigate in-vestigate the difficulty, summon witnesses and give the matter full hearing, that then their decree de-cree must be final. This court, must be given both judicial and discretionary powers. For instance, in-stance, supposing such a court in existence and it were to receive a notice that a certain mining company was not paying current notes, was working its employees over hours, or was . feeding them unwholesome food, with a petition . for redress, and the truth of the facts stated in the complaint should be established; then the court would have to possess the power to decree a remedy and have likewise the power to enforce its decree. In like manner with such a situation as that presented at Sunnyside, where there was originally no complaint of wages or hours, but simply an unlawful insistence on the part of employees that the management should adopt rules which no employees have either a legal or moral right to demand; then it would be the province of this proposed court to hear the case and if such a state of facts was established, to declare that all engaged In such insistence were guilty of a misdemeanor and punishable accordingly. accord-ingly. Ours is a ation of absolute liberty because the people have agreed to be subject to enlightened enlight-ened laws, and when they believe any law Is ' wrong to proceed through legitimate channels to repeal or airiend it. The settling of labor trou-' trou-' bles must this year or next, or sometime near, be subject to settlement by law. |
