His answer was Builders of Early Millard will make wonderful Christmas presents. Why do you worry about getting it much before then? He did another book while our book just waited to be printed, since this other book arrived just a few days before ours did. We were through with our part May 30, but it has been waiting to be printed since that time. While we are waiting for it, we will be happy to take orders for it, a ten dollar down payment w ill hold one for you, we expect the price to be S15.00 and hope the cost of printing hasnt risen since we made our first payment. We will write the biography of Lewis Tarbuck in order that you may get a preview of what it contains. Nearly all of the biographies had to be condensed in order to afford to print them. The originial biography was written by Rujean Rogers Brunson. "Lewis Tarbuck was born December 25, 1819, in Lancashire, England. Not being the oldest son, he He was could not inherit his fathers property. therefore apprenticed for seven years to John Galloway, an expert brick and stone mason from Ireland. Instead of going to school, most European boys were apprenticed to expert tradesmen in order to make sure they could earn a living. About 1838, Lewis Tarbuck married Ann. the daughter of John Galloway, and had four children: Margaret, who married William Wade; Ann married William's brother. Thomas James Wade; Ester married Ned Chritchley; and Elizabeth (Lizzie) married Peter Beauregard. Lewis wife had been a cripple most of her life, she died sometime between 1853 and 1864. About this time the Mormon missionaries had made many converts in this part of England; especially among the expert tradespeople, who were each promised land for a home and farm, if they would come to Utah. In 1864 at the age of 45, Lewis Tarbuck, his twelve year old daughter Elizabeth, along with his daughter Ann, husband Tom and daughter, five year old Maggie, also Joseph, his grandson, whose father had died, and his stepdad mistreated little Joe. His daughter Maggie married John Starley and became the mother of Harriet (Day), Bertha (Stephenson). John, Tom, Dr. Qaude, and Orvil. They came on the train to Laramie. Wyoming, where they were met by Mormon teamsters, and among those teamsters was Peter Beauregard, only 14 years old, who five years later married Elizabeth Tarbuck. seventeen years old. Lew is Tarbuck decided to settle in Fillmore, where many of his friends from England had settled. Skilled workmen were in demand, people were anxious to get out of the little loj; cabins they had been living in since 1851, and were anxious to build stone and brick homes. He helped to build Cove Fort, the Little Rock School House, the Bishop Edward Partridge Home, the Clarence Davies home, and many other brick and rock homes in Millard County, as well as working on both the Manti and St. George Temples. He was an expert workman and everyone wanted him to lay the bricks and rock for their new homes. He was constantly at work and saved his money to send back to England to bring the rest of his family to Utah. The first ones to come from England were Maggie Wade, daughter of his daughter Marguerite and William Wade (William died and Marguerite remarried a man who mistreated the children, Maggie and Joe. (Maggie married Andrew Sorenson and became the mother of Ossie and Garn Sorenson). (Joe w as the father of Lute. Artie. Hazel and Luclla Wade). Later Lewis sent for his daughter Ester Critchley and her children Lizzie, who married Andrew Rogers. Martha who married Hans Rasmussen, Alice who married Noah Rogers, and Ester's two sons Lew is and Will Critchley. Lew is Tarbuck set about teaching Lew and Will Critchley the brick laying trade and they two became experts, and have built hundreds of homes in Utah, as well as many public buildings. They two have trained many to become expert brick layers. Lew Tarbuck worked with Jack Clothier, who also trained his son Delbert to become a superb workman. It is almost impossible to estimate the good accomplished by this one man, Lewis Tarbuck. the many lives which were enriched by his labors. In later years, he lived with his daughter Lizzie Beauregard, as did his grandchildren Joe and Maggie Wade. Peter and Lizzie Beauregard had just one daughter, Lizzie, who married Will Payne, but she was raised with Joe and Maggie Wade and the three of them were always like brother and sisters. (Little Lizzie as she was called, was the mother of LaFrancc Payne). Lew is Tarbuck died at the Beauregard home, being tenderly cared for by his daughter and Peter and Lizzie Beauregard. He died September 28. 1897, aged 78 years old, and is buried in the Fillmore Citv Cemetery. & 7 days a week till 10:00 weekdays Open |
