The March deaths occurred at the rate of 1.4 per million manhours of exposure, an increase of 10 percent. Fatalities during the first quarter of the year occurred of at 1.05 per million exposure, an increase of 27 percent. All fatalities reported during March occurred at bitumintous coal and lignite mines. There were no deaths reported in anthracite operations. Of the March deaths, 22 occurred underground, 12 of which resulted from roof fails. Other death causes w'ere defined as follows: haulage, 7; machinery, 3; strip mining, 1. Fatalities in the soft coal industry have increased this year to a disgraceful point. There have been 56 fatalities reported for the first quarter, 12 more than occurred in the same period of 1963. The frequency rate has risen 291 rs of exposper million ure. The only improvement over the 1963 quarterly safety record was a drop of four in the number of deaths at strip mines.
