The railroad bridge, twenty-seve- n miles east of Helper evidently became ignited from a passing engine sometime Sunday evening. By' the time eastbound passenger train No. 2 reached the lone desert spot the flames were playing havoc with the main line bridge. The passenger was held at the spot several hours while water from the engine was applied 'to the flames. Eastbound train, No. 8, was also held at the bridge some forty minutes to assist in the work. When it seemed apparent the danger was past the trains proceeded on their belated way, leaving A. Baxter on guard. A strong breeze came up at midnight and whipped the dying embers in- to action again. Word was sent to Helper and an engine in charge of Engineer L. R. Metz and B. H. Decker was immediately dispatched to the bridge. Quick work saved the passing track bridge, which, had it been tafcen by fire would have tied up all main line traffic for several days. - The top part of the main line bridge was destroyed, but the foundation was saved.
