Randy McAllister come to an abrupt halt Monday afternoon at the hands of the American Fork Cavemen in a 51-37 defeat. The Cavemen have been on a roll of late and they were the first team to get a shot to fall in the unfamiliar unfamil-iar confines of Weber State's Dee Event Center. While Pleasant Grove struggled to find the net in the first half, American Fork broke the game open into a 10-point advantage. American Fork also did a good job of keeping the Viking scorers from getting open looks at the basket. Pleasant Grove's Nate Clement led all Vikings in the first quarter with only three points. Things didn't get much better in the second sec-ond quarter as Clement and Todd Thurgood shared team-high team-high honors with four points each. At the half, Pleasant Grove trailed 24-14. The hole got deeper for the Vikings as American Fork opened the second half on a 5-0 run and the deficit was just too much for even a typical Pleasant Grove rally. The girls were led by junior jun-ior Amber Gleason, who ran a lifetime best of 5:25.30 in the metric mile (1600 meters) for fourth place, and then teamed up with Tawny Parks, Camillia Frenzel and Jessica Kernan to finish fourth in the 4X400 meter relay with one of the top 10 fastest times in Utah this year. The boys also had a stellar stel-lar meet, with two medal-winning medal-winning performances in the relays. The Vikings were third in the 4X100 at 'jUfUUfUId (Si : w ' w 15 -- " ..- 1 ' "V J ' T - i. The win gave Pleasant Grove a ticket to the state tournament in Ogden against first-round opponent oppo-nent American Fork. Nate Clement and Chad Evans added seven points each to the Vikings' total. For a Viking team that found itself behind the eight ball from the very beginning of the season, this was an exciting and eventful year. The simple fact that Coach McAllister didn't arrive on the scene until the beginning begin-ning of school made the Vikings' acomplishments all the more impressive. Todd Thurgood ends his career at Pleasant Grove as one of the all-time great shooters. Nate Clement emerged as a strong option in the paint. Chad Evans showed us glimpses of what to expect next year. Landon Hallman became not only a scoring threat but a passing guru when it came to dishing the ball off on the drive. He also will be back next season. Point guard Lane Pont put the Vikings in a position to win all season with key baskets bas-kets and steals. Scott Valgardson Valgar-dson always came up with the quiet but valuable basket just when it was needed. The list of highlights is long, but a simple summary would be, it sure was fun to watch. Thanks, Vikings, for taking us on the ride. naced Pleasant Grove with seven points. Chad Evans answered the call in the second quarter quar-ter when starting center Nate Clement was forced to the bench with foul trouble. Evans scored seven points in the second quarter as he began what would turn out to be his career night. Pleasant Grove played impressive defense in the quarter and limited Iine Peak to only six points. The five-point advantage that the Vikings took to the linker link-er room proved to be the difference dif-ference in the game as the Knights could never quite recover from that small Pleasant Grove margin. In the third quarter the Knights battled to within three points as th ev outscored the Vikings 1 il) through the first eight min utes of the second h lf. Again Evans led the Vikings with a team-high six points in the quarter, including impressive inside moves against a proven front line of Knights who six had personal or seasonal bests. You can't ask for much more than that." The Western States Oval Meet had more than 100 participating athletes from five states.
