Show The Daily Utah Chronicle, Friday, December 3, Dog bites A University employee was bitten by a dog whose caretaker had left it tied up outside of the Marriott Library Wednesday. Manager of University Safety Services Jill Carty said Kathy Marchant was bitten in the leg about 11:30 a.m. by a chow chow, whose owner, Matthew Josten, had left in the care of University student JRoxanne Susens. Carty said Marchant suffered a small puncture wound and a large bruise. When University animal control officer Clyde Hollands arrived to detain the animal for observation, which is required whenever an animal bites a human, a confrontation ensued between Hollands and Susens, who objected to the detainment and handling of the dog, Carty ' said. "The officer was trying to subdue and secure the dog using a detainment device. Apparently the dog resisted the officer and was slightly injured; there was a little blood around," Carty said. U 1982 employee A large crowd gathered at the site of the confrontation, resulting in what Carty called an "explosive situation. Three University Police officers were dispatched to the scene for crowd control purposes. One observer estimated the crowd at about 250 people. "This type of thing could easily be avoided if people would leave their dogs at home," Carty said. "Everyone loves dogs but in this case the victim thought it looked friendly so she approached it and she got bit.' Carty explained that, as required by law, the dog has been detained in the Salt Lake City Animal Shelter for observation. Animal control officers can hold the dog for one to 10 days to determine if it has had rabies shots or has any problems that would make it unsafe. Neither Susens or Josten could be reached for comment. Pace Seven Grass study funds granted weekend- - Friday Noon Chicano Novelist Rudolfo A.
