Show SALT SUICIDES one sy Ilan iua and by john schlegel lake took a a fatal dose of morphine last saturday afternoon which caused his death at a m sunday he was removed to st marks hospital about 7 p m on saturday efforts were made to resuscitate him by dr hall and others and he would at times stand upon his feet and answer questions but the dose he had taken was too much to be overcome it appears thai he had been in the employ of the salt lake brewery as malt gnaster but on account of family troubles left the brewery on thursday and went on a spree during which he took to end his troubles an inquest was held at st marks I 1 hospital monday at which mr john A williams testified that deceased went to the depot of the salt lake brewing company in that city about 3 p m on saturday with his wife and her mother he ordered wine for them and about witness found him lying with his head on the table crying and talking of trouble in the family he had a morphine boac lle on the tab leit was nearly empty and some of the morphine was inthe wine glass he had used dr newton who was present thought he had not taken enough to hurt him but he subsequently became so seriously ill that dr bower had him sent to the hospital karl mallen stated that the deceased said 1 tried to kill myself and that it was duo to family trouble from other evidence presented it was learned that the deceased was a native of germany and was about 40 years of age the jury brought in a verdict of death from morphine poison self adminis alered s the nest suicide is by hanging wliam thompson aged 61 of 3 sixth east street hung himself in aa fit of despondency tuesday shortly after daybreak he told his wife to lie in bed and he would call her when it was necessary for her to get up and then going out he put around his neck a ropo that had an iron ring at the end through which he slipped the other end of the rope thus mak mg the noose climbing up an apple tree in the little orchard back of the house thompson tied the ropes end to the branch and jhen dropped his weight bringing his feet within a short distance of the ground the iron ring caught him by tho wind cipe shutting off breath at once and etting the suicide strangle to death sirs thompson shortly became uneasy and hurriedly dressing sent a friend mrs harriet forgrove grove at to look her husband up mrs soon discovered him dangling dead from the apple tree and immediately gave the alarm policeman andrew smith who arrived cut the body down coroner taylor held an inquest the verdict of the jury being suicide while temporarily insane thirteen years ago thompson was struck in the head with a well bucket which came near killing him then and ever since has suffered more or less from mental depression A year ago he bought his sixth east street property with the assistance 0 a mortgage which was a constant worry to him however he sold out abe other day at a profit but because he was threatened with a law suit if ho removed some lum ber from the place he got an idea that he would lose all he had and his wife bo left penniless vorry over this was the immediate cause of death the deceased leaves six grown up sons and a largo number of grandchildren mrs thompson is bearing up bravely under the terrible shock tribune |
