Show experimental FARMS president cleveland signs the agricultural experimental Esperi mental bill the late congress just previous to its final adjournment passed a bill to provide for the establishment of agricultural experiment stations in the several states and territories the object was to acquire and diffuse practical information in reference to agriculture and to promote scientific investigation and experiment respecting the principles and applications of agricultural science the law makes it the duty to conduct original researches or verify experiments on ahe physiology of plants and animals the advantages of cropping analysis of soils and water composition of fertilizers value of grasses andi orage plants and such other researches or experiments bearing directly on the agricultural industry of the united states as may be deemed advisable it is required that periodical bulletins or reports of progress shall bo sent to the newspaper bin the respective slates and territories and to such farmers as may request them an appropriation of fifteen thousand dollars a year to each state and territory is provided for the money to be drawn quarterly there is a condition however and that is that the state or territory must provide for an agricultural college school or farm by an oversight the item did not appear in the general appropriation bill and tle money could not therefore be distributed the present congress passed a bill to make the money immediately available and a dispatch from washington informs us that the president has approved the bill the government wih therefore hereafter give to every state and territory 1500 annually for agricultural experiment work upon condition that the state or territory will do something for itself several states have long maintained agrical tural colleges or departments of their colleges but utah is without either would it not be well for the assembly at the present session tomake provisions for an experimental peri mental farm and tatia get the benefit of this generous gift on the part of the nation jt is believed that the investment would be a wise one evena there to come franr the government while the great majority of the people are engaged id agricultural pursuits bonx ively few of them imea anything of tho business before aej came here they were chiefly mechanic tradesmen and day laborers and turned to f arming because there was nothing else for them to do if they have succeeded it has been because they worked hard and the soil was new and rich and not because of their knowledge of the industry Also ie they have been moderately successful in their ignorance of the business and of the nature character and capabilities of tho soil how great would have been their achievement it they bad at all times known what to do from the first in this territory agriculture has been an experiment not only as to the science itself but as to those engaged in it if the experiments can be undertaken at the public expense and the benefits be ob tai the agriculturists without cost it will prove of great advantage to the territory the belter investments of 0 few thousand dollars could not well be made some time ago the enterprising people of lehi in tho expectation that an experimental farm would be established took the initiative in the matter of securing it they claim that fairly representative land in any desired quantity can be had there at reasonable rates that there is water in abundance both from mountain streams and flowing wells cind that the climate is suitable it is learned that they have raised a purse of 2000 which they offer as an inducement to the location of the barmat the selection of a site however is a matter for after consideration let us make provision for the farm and then designate the site which offers most inducements herald |
