THE ARTS Vocalist t·o sing in Nashville By ANNA TURPIN JOURNAL ARTSeDITOR Senior music major Marlo Madsen is on her way to Nashville to compete at the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Vocal Competition. Madsen, a vocal student of Carol Ann Modesitt, was the winner in all her preliminary rounds, win:ning the state competition last December and the southwest regional competition held in Tucson in February. The national competition will be held March 30. Madsen will compete against six winners from the other regions ages ranging from 18 to 27. She will sing 45 minutes of music from various styles, periods and gerires. Almost 500 students have been involved in the competition. T he field was narrowed down to the final .seven, with Madsen included. First prize is a cash p rize of $2;000. Vocal competitions are nothing new to this performer. Sh e has received awards and recognitions at numerous region and state level competitions. This SUU singer is from Littleton, Colo. She is extensively involved in SUU's vocal ensembles including C oncert Choir, Opus and Opera.She has performed lead roles in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Carmen and Guys and Dolls, and is currently preparing the role of Laetitia for the upcoming production of The Old Maid and the Thief. Last year she was awarded SUU's performer of the year, and has been voted by the music department the Outstanding Female Vocalist for the past three years. Students invited to submit art Ar). invitation to enter artwork in the 1998 SUU Student Art Competition has been offered by the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. Art work must be submitted tomorrow between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for jurying for possible inclusion in an April 2-24 all-st1,1dent exhibit. Entries are to be delivered to the Cedar Breaks Room in the Sharwan Center. Ali entries must ha.ve been completed after April 1997 and must not have been previously displayed at the Braithwaite Gallery. An official entry form must accompany each work submitted. Forms are available at the Braithwaite Gallery, SUU art department Offices in Room 213 of the Cen trum, or at the Student Activities Office. Cash. awards will be presented for best oi show and first place winners in. twodimensional freehand, two dimensional technology, and three dimensional works.
