Leave little ones to learn important skills or call Nature Center for advice Ogden Nature Center Nature Notes By JULJE McGREW here the days longer and the world is abounding new life including is Spring baby birds Each year we receive more than 400 birds from people in the community Unfortunately a large proportion of the birds that we receive are babies many of which would be better oil left alone Out of good intentions people “kidnap” them thinking that they can care for the babies themselves However humans can not teach wild birds the life lessons they need to survive Interfering with a bird’s natural course of development will ' greatly reduce its chances for survival in the wild It is also illegal to have any wild bird in your possession even temporarily without a permit To the untrained eye baby birds are easily mistaken for being injured abandoned or orphaned What is more likely is that the bird has left the nest on time and is simply exploring Baby birds go through three stages of development before they are able to survive on their own: Hatchling Nestling and Fledgling Hatchlings are very young their eyes are closed and they will be either completely naked or have sparse down but no feathers Nestling's eyes will be partially open and their bodies will be covered with down prickly looking “quills” or some feathers Hatchlings and Nestlings are dependent of their parents for food and warmth If you find one on the ground the best thing you can do is put it back into its nest as soon as possible Since birds do not have a keen sense of smell they will not reject their young if they are touched by humans However it is important to handle the bird as little as possible because the human contact stresses the bird If you can’t find the nest or it is too high for you to reach or it is damaged you can build a nest Punch holes in the bottom of a small plastic tub or bucket and put the remains of the nest or other materials (clean dry grass or dry leaves) into the container Securely attach the container to the original nest tree or one nearby then place the baby in the center Fledglings have stumpy tails are fully feathered or are fuzzy Fledglings leave the nest before they learn how to fly They will remain on the ground for a few days to learn important skills while their parents continue to feed and protect them This is a natural step in their development If you find a fledgling leave it alone Do not put it back into the nest it will only jump out again and could injure itself It is important to keep dogs cats and children away from the area for a few days If you have questions call the Nature Center for advice at 621-759- 215 West 12th Street By DIANA BAHTISHI Standard-Examine- R' I 3 r correspondent A celebration in honor of Arbor Day was held last week at Ogden’s Nature Center Greg Caudell chairman of the Urban Forestry Committee for Ogden City and his daughter Bailey were the two featured speakers Caudell spoke of Jay Sterling Morton the father and founder of Arbor Day in the United States Morton was a successful businessman and political leader with a great passion for nature “Other holidays repose upon the Ordinance From IE compatible and complementary Members of the council haggled over the ambiguous harmony issue finding it open to subjective interpretation The position of the building on the property causes it to block the view of Angler's Inn from the road along with the other three businesses in the same strip Councilwoman Nancy Brough said the issue gave her heartburn Ron’s Auto might be in harmony with the other businesses in the same building but the way the proposed building juts out on the lot causes it to conflict w'ith the total harmony of the area Brough said Taylor’s attorney Stan Graham said he felt the site plan complied with the existing ordinance The configuration of the building is not unique other recent structures have been built past - Arbor Day proposes on the future” Caudell said quoting Morton He also quoted Einstein who said: “We should put back what we take out” Caudell said that one individual in a lifetime consumes the wood of 200 mature trees On April 10 1872 a monumental effort was made when 1 million trees were planted Each state designates its own day to celebrate Arbor Day and the national day is April 23 Utah’s designated day is the last Friday in April At the ceremony a proclamation was presented from Mayor Glenn Mecham that named April 30 1999 as Ogden City’s Arbor Day Ogden City was presented w'ith the “Tree City USA” award by The National Arbor along the same lines Graham said Don Adamson owner of the building that houses Angler’s Inn Signs PDQ Diamond Glass and Mr 4x4 spoke on behalf of his tenants at the public hearing Wednesday “If Ron is allowed to build 20 feet back from the road and block the view of my building I don’t see how that can be harmonious We’ll end up a white elephant” he said Adamson said that approval of the site plan would be inconsistent with the intent of the city's ordinance to maintain harmony among businesses “All of my tenants have said they will move out if the new site plan is implemented” Adamson said “I don’t know what you expect me to do with an empty building” Councilman Bruce Burrows also spoke out against the site plan -- 5 ThlsWeekOrictFeafUT Julie McGrew is the Visitor Services Coordinator at the Ogden Mature Center From IE the students are gone because it will be an asbestos nightmare” said Ogden High School’s principal Deborrah Gomberg Although only a few students will be able to use the elevator all will benefit in an unexpected way “We’ll finally have a ground to top floor shaft where cables and wires can be fed to each floor” Gomberg said “This is a huge step toward updating our phone and public address systems and bringing Internet access into the classrooms” The building’s solid stone and brick walls prohibit much remodeling and renovation Fortunately the custodian closets are stacked on top of each other from the basement on up and 1095 Pork Chops Half BBQ Chicken Prime Rib Sandwich Coupon ' It $ Good For Up To 4 People' Clip This OO ANY ENTREE OFF Not Valid with Any Other Specials Coupon Expires May 31 1999 625-422- 50-fo- ot backs” public hearing to change the code that lent itself to subjective interpretation In a unanimous vote the council simplified the setback requirements for commercial zones to a minimum regardless of the width of the road The requirement that the building take up a maximum of 60 percent of the lot was also amended to a 45 percent limitation leaving more space on the lot for parking landscaping and setbacks “Many cities still have the 60 requirepercent building-to-lo- t ment With high retail volume businesses its not a problem because of the amount of parking they require” said Daily “We saw the need to amend our ordinance to keep pace with the changing needs of our community- He suggested that Taylor build in a different configuration When asked if he had considered other configurations Taylor said that the proposed site plan met their needs and was designed the way he wanted it Daily said that Angler’s Inn is set back 75 feet from the road so setback for the adeven a jacent building would interfere with the line of sight from the road The motion to approve the site plan passed 2 with Brough and Burrows voting against it Councilw'oman Jean Bonham said she disliked the site plan but voted for it because it complied -” with the ordinance as stated You can reach correspondent 2 the to vote apFollowing Cathy McKittrick by leaving a mesprove the site plan for Ron’s Au3 tomotive Inc the council held a sage at r -
