BUY GWW!! : Dear Reader: A slug" of periodical magazines comes into our home each month; some get read, some gets a quick look and others get Ignored. We pile them all up, hoping that well get back to reading them all someday, but by that someday comes, we have a slug" more on hand so we haul the old ones away and make plans for the new- & . er arrivals. I suppose my family is the only family in the county that does that but I want you all to know that our intentions are good and when the pace of this life starts slowing down, Im gonna read a little out of each magazine every month even if I die trying. But my periodical problem only deals indirectly with my subject for today which is The Word of Wisdom." , An article appeared in the August 1969 issue of the Improvement Era; thats a magazine put out by the Mormon Church. Look around; you may find a few copies in your home somewhere as unused as the day they came off the press. (If I seem a little cynical, please forgive me. Its now 4:00 a.m. A time when sensible people should be sleeping and Im sitting here writing to you.) Well, lets get on with it. This article I mentioned is found on page 60 of that issue. It was written by Dr. Ray G. Cowley . and he deals with heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the United States, with half a million Americans dying annually from its onslaught. If you read that complete article, he proves that most heart problems are caused by dietary habits of the American people. Most of us feel that we must have meat with practically every meal. We therefore, with one exception, lead the nations of the world in death by heart disease. He states: Saturated fats are usually solid at room temperature and originate primarily in animals and fowls. One fact is certain; Daily consumption of animal and meat and fat may be an important cause of coronary heart disease." The Doc continues by comparing experiments made on Americans with other nations of the world where meat is not an important item in their diets and I came forth convinced that most of us Americans America's favorite winter tire 11M&OTEIE TO tOapy IP II, WE MS mm mgII mmj. When the Word of Wisdom is mentioned smoking, drinking tea, coffee and hard liquor dominate our thinking. I wonder when we are going to include that portion of the law that warns us against the overuse of meat. One sees many of the brethern who wouldnt think of drinking a cup of coffee but will take on a steak two inches thick and eight inches across once per day. The law reads: Yea, flesh also of beasts and of fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving;' neverless they are to be used sparingly; And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine." D.C. 89.. Verses 12 and 13. I suppose Ill have the cattle and sheep men angry with me, but I cant help it. Im just quoting the law as its written not as Id like it written and Im also kinda glad the law reads that way because meat is getting to dern expensive, we can afford to eat it only sparingly. Well I guess Ill conclude. Ive done enough damage. But you know you should get out the August issue of the Era and read the article on page 60. The life you save may be your own. Bad men live that they may eat and drink, whereas good men eat and drink that they may live." Socrates.
