Show Plan preparation for the Deer hunt Last minute preparations are now under way for the annual deer hunt. An estimated 170,000 hunters will go afield this year after deer. Many of these will be first-tim- e or inexperienced hunters who may find that they left some important items home and failed to prepare fully for their hunting trip. Proper preparation for the deer hunt should include: chains, shovels, antifreeze and extra fuel for vehicles; a safe rifle, warm clothing, footproperly sighted-in- ; gear and conspicuous outer clothing of the proper color; equipment for the proper care of game; arrangements with a butcher or locker plant to cool, age and cut up your venison; and a good knowledge of the laws governing the deer hunt. Also, dont forget a piece of string for your deer tag. A booklet that should be of interest to experienced and inexperienced hunters alike is available from Fish and Game Division offices. The booklet is entitled, "Venison Field Care and Cooking. It includes methods of proper care for deer in the field as well as hints and recipes for cooking venison. The booklet is free of charge. Dennis Wall number 44 heads up field against Spanish Fork as Gary Powell number 11 and Russ Jones number 61 set up the blocking. Dennis made 131 yards against the Dons, more than some teams have made all rogeiher. Payson Lions cinched berth in quarter finals in battle with Spanish Fork Dons Payson Lions cinched a quarterfinal berth, and at the same time lost a chance to beat arch rival Spanish Fork. With a 5 win 1 loss 1 tie record and a .substantial lead over second place class A Lehi, Payson will be playing the second place team from region five over the November 8 weekend at Payson. Presently, it is unclear in Region Five, North Summit, Wasatch and Union are fighting for places in state. Another week should clarify the picture, two weeks will end it, because the regular season ends a week from Friday, October 24th. 7-- Prior to actually playing Spanish Fork, speculation was high that the Dons, while undefeated in five games, really hadnt met a good team. Finally, they were defeated at the hands of Provo, and the skeptic all felt their feelings justified. However, after the Payson game, a different attitude may prevail. Spanish Fork played a good game, as did Payson, and it was just a case of two real fine teams playing head knocking football for four quarters, and Payson emerging short by a couple of points after touchdown. Payson scored in the first quarter with Dennis Lamb going over after a long run, Dennis Wall kicked the PAT and the Lions In the second quarter the Dons led 0. scored as well as in the third quarter and in each touchdown, instead of going for one point by kicking, made two point conversions. In the final quarter, Payson scored once on a pass from Gary Powell to Brent Ekins. As the game ended, Payson was deep in Dons territory, threatening and almost came away with a victory on a pass to Terry Carter, that was deflected at the last minute. For Spanish Fork, it was the first victory in many a year, however Payson did play a good game, and except for some bad breaks, may well have beaten Spanish F ork. This Thursday, American Fork makes the trip to Payson, followed bySpringville on the following Friday, October 24. Game time for both games will be 2:30 p.m. on Payson High School Field. 7-- GAD-A-BOUTMdolm S Dixon Phono Mrs. Dolly Nelson, Mrs. Joyce Provst-gaar- d and children, Mr. and Mrs. Carl J. The couple state their tomatoes started producing October first and are expected to bear until the first of the year. This is their second year in production. A couple from Auckland, New Mr. Observe laws respects rights Fish and Game law enforcement officials urge all deer hunters going afield this Saturday to observe the laws and respect the rights of others. Each year several arrests are made during the deer hunt for violations of the deer proclamation. Most frequent violations are: carrying a loaded firearnh in a vehicle, failure to tag the deer, failure to properly validate the tag by cutting out the proper dates and sex, and improper use of license or permit. A new law, introduced last year, makes it unlawful for any person to throw or cast the rays of any spotlight or other artificial light upon any game animal while having in his possession any firearm or other weapon whereby the animal could be killed. Hunters should obtain a proclamation and read it carefully before going afield. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. DONT LOSE YOUR LICENSE Sportsmen who ignore NoTrespassing signs this fall may lose their hunting and fishing privileges for a year. Under provisions of a new law passed by the last Legislature, persons convicted of trespassing shall have their license revoked for the period of a year. In addition, the minimum fine for this offense is $50.00. Dont lose your fishing or hunting privileges; obtain permission before you enter private property and observe all posted areas. The sportsman is the real loser when private lands are closed to hunting or fishing. four-point- er 00 ng West Mountain Views Phone Mrs. Ruby Meredith 465-333- Week in Genola This Mr. and Mrs. Carl Butler were hosts at a family dinner and family home hour on Wednesday. A Eugene Hillman of Each year the deer hunt is marred by one or two serious hunting accidents. Such accidents are generally the result of failure to observe the laws governing the deer hunt. Others are caused by carelessness and improper gun handling. In addition to the accidents caused by hunters, the accidental killing of elk and moose during the deer hunt is alarming. An estimated 200 elk are killed illegally each deer season. Many of these animals could be saved and hunter accidents reduced if the deer hunter was sure of his target. Thisdeer season take the time to properly identify your target, and make a clean kill. Dont mar your hunting trip by causing an accident. Roger (Dusty) Spencer center with elk he shot.
