Show NEEDS ATTENTION. Tke newspapers of the East have been poking considerable fun at General Dement De-ment and his mare's nest, and tke conclusion con-clusion wkick tkey have arrived at is that the gentleman migkt as well pack hie collar-box and set his face toward his Illinois home, giving up all kopes of confirmation con-firmation at tke kands of tke Senate. Doubtless tkey are correct. But in tke meantime tke duties of tke office are being neglected, and work tkat weeks ago skpuld kave-passed tkiougk tke Surveyor-General's kands, is held back because be-cause the necessary signatures cannot be procured. This is all wrong. The office should not be allowed to remain re-main practically closed because of the fool antics of Dement, and under the circumstances cir-cumstances the Senate should dispose of his case (if the President does not make action on their part unnecessary by withdrawing with-drawing his appointment) at the fi.irllpsr. I Iossible moment. In the light of all that has been said and done t by General Dement, we are inclined to think that few tears would be shed by citizens here if the gentleman's appointment should be withdrawn, but it is absolutely necessary that the operations opera-tions of the office should be continued, and if the matter is properly laid before the authorities at Waskington, there would doubtless be some steps taken to remedy tke trouble. Let it be attended to without further delay. |
