Show PURSUE THEM. Saturday some arrests were made by the SheriTof persons charged with lewdness. lewd-ness. This has given rise to some comment com-ment and much conjecture. Whether the j particular persons arrested are guilty as charged or not makes comparatively little difference. That the city has been and still is infested with houses of ill fame is a notorious fact. Occasionally the keepers keep-ers of such houses have been brought before the police magistrate of the city i and fined, and then permitted to carry on J their disreputable business in safety i until a certain number of months rolled by . Practically, these houses have been licensed. It is wrong. The keep-t keep-t ors of such houses should be pursued until they have no place whereon to lay their heads, or until they find a place outside out-side of Utah. The patrons and supporters support-ers of such places should also be pursued I witli the same relentless vigor as the keepers, for without patrons and support- ers these places could not be. That for I which we blame the county authorities is I: that they liave permitted these same place of ill-fame to pursue their business ? without let or hindrance, and have only i ; . of late waked up to a sense of the enorin- I i M i ity of the crime they are now trying .' to suppress. To enforce this law but j captiously and spasmodically will have j j but an ill effect, for its present enforce- f i ment savors of a sinister purpose. Vio- ? ! lators of this law and of all others should 5 be made to fear the law at all times, and j not merely for a brief season. That " ; which makes people respect the law is j the continual enforcement and vindica- ,; tion of the law, and not a, fitful effort I ; continued for a brief period, after which j t here comes a long time of indulgence to l violators of the law. Let all the laws be ' enforced and at all times and against all j I : trespassers, and then there will be far j i less lawlessness in Utah than at present. 1 :; ThisapplieB to Federal and Territorial j rij laws and to city ordinances. i |
