Show That Unfortunate Baby. A week ago the Democrat published the particulars of an infant - baby being left bv some unknown party on the doorstep door-step of Mr. Alpin's residence on the corner cor-ner of Main and Fourth South Streets. No clue to the parents of the little foundling found-ling were obtained until yesterday. Mrs.E. A. Slogan, but 6ix weeks from Kansas City, and at present residing on West Temple street, had the child, and said she gave birth to it some six weeks ago at St. Mary's hospital. The discouraged young mother could not obtain work, and so put the child in the hands of Mrs. Ensign, who promised to adopt and care for it. Mrs. Slogan further states that the child was taken to Mr. Alpin's house with his wife's consent. The affair af-fair has a bit of mystery about it, which implicates all named. A Democrat reporter re-porter called on Mrs. Ensign to-day in order to learn her statement, but that lady absolutely refused to say a word until un-til her statement in to-morrow morning's Tribune had been read. Mrs. Slogan's statement is vouched for. The child died last night, and the mother is in grief and want. Her condition condi-tion should be looked into by those in search of a worthy case on which to bestow be-stow kindness. |
