Show A Sensation in San Francisco. : San Fbancisco. September 26. Consider-' able excitement was occasioned here last night on the report that an attempt had been made to blow up Her British Majesty's ship "Constance", with an infernal maohine, whioh had been smuggled aboard her. H. J. Boez, the proprietor of the meat stall at Golden Gate market, who supplied the vessel ves-sel with meat, stated that when he boarded the ship early in the morning, he was examined ex-amined as to any probable knowledge he might have regarding the infernal machine, which the Lieutenant, who questioned him, said had been sent to the Captain of the "Constance." "Con-stance." Inquiry of the British Consul regarding re-garding the affair brought forth a statement from Consul Stanley as f ollows:' The Captain received an anonymous letter warning him that an attempt would be made to attach an infernal machine to the ship. This letter was friendly, and contained con-tained no threat, purporting only to warn him. He came to me with the letter. I instructed in-structed him what to do. I told him that it would be best to double his sentries and challenge all r.pproach to the ship, the. Mr. Stanley further added that as far as he knew no attempt had been made to get an infernal machine aboard the ship, for none had been reported to him. The "Constance" arrived last Sunday, and left this afternoon on a cruise. |
