Show GIVE US A CONSERVATIVE POLICY AND MEN. There is much said in the East about the "conservative" policy which' the Administration Ad-ministration should adopt in regard to Utah matters, and it has been strongly recommended to appoint none but conservative con-servative men to offices here. That suits the loyal people of this Territory to a dot. Webster defines, the word as "Having power to preserve in an entire slate, or from loss, want or injury ; preservative one who or that which preserves from ruin, innovation or entire change." That expresses the sentiments of the Gentiles of Utah as clearly as though the definition defini-tion had ben constructed for the purpose pur-pose of explaining their position. They desire the strict enforcement of the laws, which vis and ever has been a cardinal principle in the policy of our republican government, and one which no reasonable reason-able or sensible person will contend in volves "entire change," or in fact any change whatever in the governmental policy of the Nation since its foundation. They want preservation from "ruin, innovation in-novation and injury," such as will most certainly follow the continuation of the beastly practices and disloyal teachings teach-ings of the leaders of the Mormon Church. They desire severance of Church and State, which is most assuredly as-suredly conservative doctrine, as none but the most radical fanatic will argue that the connection is not subversive of every principle of republicanism, or that its general adoption would not be fatal to our present form of government. They ask the Administration to preserve, "in an entire state," the time-honored institutions insti-tutions of our beloved country, and that they' shall not be permitted to be wrecked or shattered by such "innovations" as an immoral and treasonable organization is at this moment practicing in their midst. This is all they ask, and there is certainly nothing in their request which does not come within even the most forced or strained construction of conservatism, as defined by the great lexicographer. Give us by all means a conservative policy and conservative officers for this Territory. |
