Show The Gas Age. , I" The natural gas that spouts from bored wells in Pittsburg and vicinity is accomplishing accom-plishing all that was expected of it. The supply is abundant, and as yet there are no signs of exhaustion. At present 1,500 dwellings and 145 manufacturing establishments estab-lishments are using the gas, which serves for both heating and lighting purposes. It is much cheaper, than coal, and it is estimated that, it has already dispensed with 8,000 or 10,000 tons.of coal per day in the city. This coal is worth, at $2.50 a ton, $20,000 to $25,000 a day the mining min-ing of it costing , $6,000 to $7,500. The withdrawal of this large amount of money ' j from the mining population must already J be severely felt, and at the present rate it ! is difficult to tell what the effect will be . upon the . mining trade.
