Show Not Mormons Who Sell the Whisky. Ed. ' Democrat : The Tribune reporter re-porter in his issue of Oct. 13th, makes Indian Agent J. B. Kinny charge the Mormons of Ashley Fork , with selling whisky to his Indians. The undersigned resides at Ashley, and has resided there for a number of years, and he has no knowledge of the Mormons selling whisky to Indians. On the contrary, he knows that the Mormons living in Ashley valley, as a community, are very much opposed to the sale of whiskv to Indians, and in connection with the "Gentiles" who reside there, also, have done everything every-thing in their power to prevent the wicked traffic. .The sale of whisky to the Indians at Ashley's Fork is liable to being trouble to the people residing in the valley without with-out a moment's warning, and whether-Mormons whether-Mormons or ."Gentiles" thev would be the biggest fools in the world to expose their wives and children to drunken savages. sav-ages. The Mormon people residing at Ashley Fork have done as much to prevent pre-vent the sale of whisky to Indians as the agents residing on the Ute reservation. Two men have been caught at Ashley, within my knowledge, selling Indians whisky, one was caught by Agent Critch-low Critch-low and the other by the citizens Of AshlPV Vnf unl!,,. lr - .j ""u """"ci was a luurmon, and neither was punished bv the courts, though the evidence was conclusive. If Major Kinny will take the trouble to investigate in-vestigate the matter, he will find that the poison whiskey to which he alludes is, perhaps, in nine cases out of ten, sold to his Indians by renegades, who are not Mormons. It would be well for the community com-munity at large if all such characters were nonest. Respectfully, G. W. Crouch. |
