Show Richard Oliver's trial. Before the Court ou u Charge of Pitchforking Deputy ITIix. Almost the entire day was taken up in the Third District Court by the trial of Richard Oliver, charged with assault wjth.intent to do bodily harm. Oliver is the man who attacked Deputy Mix last year with a : pitchfork, and when placed upon the stand this, morning he told a patched-up story with which he hoped to prove his innocence. Deputies Mix and Barker were examined for the prosecution, and Johanna Willehback, j John Smith, John Smith, Jr., Charles Smith, George White, Thomas White and Alonzo Jenkins for the defense. The jury impaneled for the case contained quite a number of Mormons, and from the nature of the circumstances connected with the affair it was a general inference that difficulty would be experienced in getting a verdict of guilty .- Much of this afternoon's session was occupied by Arthur Brown in his argument argu-ment for the defense, and W. H. Dickson for the prosecution. In his argument Mr. Brown used the expression, "These fellows who hold stinking little offices under un-der the Government," and Mr. Dickson took the expression up in his final speech and used it effectively to the discomfiture of the author. The arguments of the Prosecuting Attorney, especially touching this point, were pow ' erful and eloquent and were delivered with a warmth and earnestness which told how heartily the situation was appreciated ap-preciated by the gentleman. The case was given. to the jury at 4 o'clock. |
