Show Don Carles Bid for the Throne. Madrid, November 30. The new Cabinet is approved throughout Spain. The only fear is in regard to Senor Zorilla, the Republican Repub-lican chief, who will loose prestige unless he attempts a revolt. If he is captured the sentence of deathj already passed upon him for participating in former risings, will be executed immediately. . . The manifesto of Don Carlos, promising to confirm to the Spaniards al then present civil and religious liberties, is considered a direct bid for the throne, and is also interpreted inter-preted as a prelude to a proposal of marriage between Don Carlos' son, Prince Jaime, and the Princess of the Austrias, in the event of no heir to the throne being born. Both Car-lists Car-lists and Monarchists would welcome such a settlement with acclamation, as it would end a fifty years' conflict and enable Spain to assume an appropriate position among the Powers of Europe. |
