Show Huntington Consolidating Eastern Railroads. New York, January 7. Huntington said yesterday: "I am working on a scheme to consolidate my roads east of the Mississippi river, under the management of one company, com-pany, similar to the Southern Pacific Company Com-pany west of the Mississippi. The name of the new company will be the Newport, News & Mississippi Valley Railroad Company. I do not know yet what roads will be included in the consolidation, so far there is no doubt that the Chesapeake, Ohio & Southwestern, and Elizabeth, Lexington & Big Sandy will be included. I do not know when the scheme will be perfected. We worked three years to perfect the Southern South-ern Pacific Company. This consolidation is made to cut down operating expenses. It will also enable us to carry on business at low rates. Iam not seeking' to get control of the Louisville, Evansville & St. Louis road, although it would seem to be a natural connection to St. Louis. There are, however, how-ever, two other lines over which we could get to St. Louis, either of which would answer an-swer equally well. |
