Show UNITYFOUNDED OX EQUITY Never since THE DEMOCRAT existed has it advocated any policy on the Utah question except united action against our common foe In no instance has there ever appeared an article advocating the running of candidates as Republican and Democrat against each other We are not blind to the fact that in union there is strength What we have advocated and do advocate and propose to advocate is a unity founded on equity in all our Utah affairs We want Democrats to have a voice and a fair representation in all public matters If defeat is to come we as Democrats will stand up bravely and meet it If victory is to reward our efforts against common foe we want a fair proportion ot the honors for Democrats Demo-crats whoever may be satisfied with less of duty and responsibility is no true Democrat or friend of Democracy We are for Democratic principles first and we are supporters of the Administration Administra-tion in all its efforts to maintain Demo sratic principles We are first last and all the time opposed to the union of Church and State Now to strengthen the opposition to the common foe in Utah we believe it will be best to have both Democrat and Republican organizations and for each party to enroll every man it can control and then when conventions are held for nominations of candidates for public positions let each party hold its convention conven-tion on the same day and in the same city and let there be an agreement by lot or otherwise that each party may select candidates for the names of the officers represented by odd numbers and the other those represented by even numbers then let the delegates meet in joint convention and ratify the nomination nomina-tion and pledge united support for the joint ticket Then each party will have its representatives on the ticketand all would be interested to elect the whole ticket Right here we wish to say that this plan was suggested to us by a Republican and we heartily adopt it until a better plan is suggested We want success we believe in party organizations as the best means for drawing from the liberal lib-eral and discontented in the ranks of our opponents and for calling I out the entire loyal vote This is no law of the Medes and Persians Per-sians Show us a better way if you have one and we will adopt it We ask what we would grantequal rights and fair play We do not believe in a union ticket with two Democrats and thirteen Republicans Re-publicans on it nor do we believe in a nonpartisan policy that votes against as loyal a man as Col Wm Ferry and in favor of a Republican who was not a candidate |
