Show A GAS WELL An Inch mid a Half Flow Burns Tiro and a Half Feet High A gas well which will prove invaluable to its owner was discovered on the Seventh Sev-enth ward lot of J E Callister a proprietor propri-etor of the Star printing office shortly before dark last evening Mr Callister was driving for a flow of water and when the pipe was down about seventynine feet the peculiar odor arising from it attracted the attention of the workmen By placing the hand overtime over-time opening it was found that there was a strong pressure from below and this with the odor caused Mr Callister to conclude that gas had been struck A light was applied and a blaze immediately im-mediately shot into the air a distance of about six feet It soon became more steady however and remained about two and a half feet high during the evening even-ing The pipe from which the flow came was one and a half inches in diameter and the gas seemed to be perfectly pure They boiled water and fried sausages over the flame in a remarkably short time The gas was allowed to burn all night and this morning there seemed to be little or no diminution in its height The owner of the property is very anxious to get water at present and he has therefore driven through the gas well He expects soon to drive for gas in hopes of getting enough to serve as light and fuel |
