Show I Clmrtlcrs Trial NEW Yom March nThe trial of the bookkeeper E R Chartier accused of em bezzlement of 50000 from the Pennsylvania Pennsylva-nia Railway Company at Aspinwall was continued today Edward G Penfields the New York agent of the company testified to his examination of the accounts and the discovering of the shortage Algernon S Williams in opening for the defense asserted that while his client Char tier was the actual defendant in the case the nominal defendant Clement Dupuy the former auditor of the company did not appear ap-pear The excuse was that he could not be found Williams then informed them that Mr Dupuy was in Paris whither he went after leaving the employ of the company that Mr Dupny could be found if desired and intimated that the company did not care to find out Chartier the general agent then testified He said that in March 1883 the companys office in Aspinwall was burned during an insurrection A large amount of money belonging be-longing to the natives was melted The safes of the company were axis flight up in the building and could not be recovered for several days after the fire Then Chartier and Cashier Dupuy climbed up by the aid of ladders and broke open the safes Their contents were thrown into the boxes which were placed on carts ond driven to Dnpuys house The entire force of the company consisting of about a dozen men fully ARMED WITH PISTOLS And carbines was employed in the transfer trans-fer as it was not deemed safe owing to the excited state of the population to remove re-move the money without a guard On the next day the money was counted in the presence pres-ence of witness and Depuy and another employee em-ployee Several weeks later Depuy came to New York and Chartier acted as cashier until July 9th Witness knew nothing of the draft No 4477 of the company for 50000 on this city If it passed through hands it was in the ordinary business of the oom puny When Chartier left Aspinwall in October the company had not finished making up its full account Just before he left they had counted the money and vouchers vouch-ers and the balance was struck He left on a vpcation coming to this city When about to return he received a telegram telling him to remain in this city a little longer In three or four weeks letters came from hid brother in Aspinwall to the effect that errors had been discovered in the accounts The examination was adjourned until today |
