Show CIGAR MAKERS 1 I Their Strike Likely to Prove Serious Seri-ous Operatives and Their Families Without Bread NEW ORLEANS Oct 7A Picayune special from Key West Florida says Havana advices ad-vices by steamer today state that the cigar makers strike there which has continued seven weeks will probably assume a very serious aspect be fore a settlement reached The strike originated and until Monday was confined to the factories working par tido or inferior tobacco but in consequence of no settlement being reached at an immense im-mense joint meeting of manufacturers and operatives held last Sunday at Alba Theatre the manufacturers of the Vrielta Abaas tobacco to-bacco joined issue with the others and closed their establishments in order to prevent their operatives from contributing toward the support of the strikers The strike has extended to San Diego de las Vegal Bejuoal San Antonio Guegas and other interior towns It is estimated that 20000 persons who derive a livelihood from the tobacco industry on the island are idle and consider able distress prevails among them As usual the rough element taking advantage of the general excitement is committing depreda tions Highway robberies and assassinations occur daily A riot has been apprehended for several days by the authorities of Ha vana who have taken precautions to keep all the available civil guards under arms while mounted police patrol the city prepared for any emergency All sorts of rumors are rife as to the attitude of the Voluntaries in theavent of an uprising but it is known that they are indifferent and will hold themselves aloof as many of their members are among the strikers They assert sent that they did not volunteer to wage warn war-n their comrades Necessity is forcing those who can to leave the Island Every steamer brings a large number of persons here and during the past month over 1000 have arrived A delegate from the Havana Cigar Makers Union is now here seeking pecuniary aid from the cigar makers and he has been assured sured of continued contributions during the continuance of the strike The following cablegram was received last night via Havana by the President of the Cigar Makers Union The cigar makers and strippers of San Diego de Las Vegas are out of employment and destitute 800 men and 800 women are without bread for their families and ask their brethren in Key West for relief and transportation Announce by telegraph to Tampa and New York also notify the nights of Labor |
