Show THE COLORED MAN The status of the colored man since the day that made Abraham Lincoln immortal im-mortal has always been of uncertain quantity and never of certain quality owing to the fast and loose or shuttlecock shuttle-cock methods employed by the Republican Republi-can party to win his political support and to ignore the claims of his race when that support was gained No cry taken up by the stump orators of that party ever had a tithe of the unction in utterance utter-ance as the cry of Southern outrages on colored men and yet after twentyfive years of rule we find but one colored man in high public office and he only because he was useful to the party in whippingin political strength for them Since the change in Government thousands of colored col-ored men who failed to obtain encourage ment from the Republican party have looked to the Democratic Administration for preferment and because in the short space of two years more of their number have not been given office they feel slighted as a race This feeling found vent in Boston on Wednesday last at a conference of the colored men of New England called to take action looking to their future status in business society and politics Tames M Trotter an educated colored man from Hyde Park presided t and addressed the conference as follows These conferences and conventions he f said have ceased to do any good toward ameliorating the lot of the colored men by j acting upon the sentiment of the white people peo-ple of the country The fault ho continued o contin-ued is our own more than that of any other race in the country that we arc not free and independent men The time has come when the negro should demand a whole loaf and nothing else He has played the halfloaf game long enough The only place to affect the politician is at the polls This cry is the result of the hybrid position allotted to the race by their sanctimonious masters the Republican part and if the colored men of New j England and the whole country seek to obtain their full and free condition in all I the walks of life they have but to give their allegiance and support to the Democratic I Dem-ocratic party and as is the case with that I party from its origin it will ever be true I to its friends There can be no better proof of the ingratitude and selfishness of the Republican leaders than this studied ostracism of the colored man Dc J t 1 I after using his ballot to obtain power and now that the warning note is sounded colored men all over the country should decide to throw their votes and influence with the Democratic party and thus deserve de-serve the recognition so long denied them by Republican bosses There is no reason rea-son why the colored man should be os tracised because he is colored and if the men of that race determine to strengthen the hands of the Democratic party by their votes and influence they can look ahead to a speedy delivery from their present abject position to a place among men in the councils of the nation with a full guarantee of all that was intended by the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution Consti-tution but which has never been given by those who framed and passed that Amendment |
