Through-out the Whirlwinds Course Appalling Instruction y uCyclone CINCINNATI September 9rrhe Commercia Gazette has telegraphic advices from Washington I Wash-ington Ohio stating that a terrific cyclone passed over that neighborhood last night doing great damage to property A number of lives were lost A Bloomingbnrg special to the same paper confirms this report and adds that the latter town is in ruins Owing to the condition of tho telegraph wires details cannot be given Violent electric1 disturbances were seen to tho north from Cincinnati jumght although the storm was not very heavy I Another dispatch from Washington CourtHouse Court-House says In every direction through the murky darkness a mad frenzy seemed to seize tho people and they hurried hither and thither in their wild distraction little knowing know-ing whether they were fleeing After the whirlwind whirl-wind which lasted about ten minutes a heavy rainfall set in which still continues unabated at this writing As soon as a few of the cooler heads recovered their senses searcnmg parties were organized and the sad work of LOOKING FOB THE DEAD BEGAN So far fifteen bodies have been recovered from the debris of the various ruined buildings build-ings and the dreary work is just beginning to get under way It is probable as many more will be found before morning The glimmer of lanterns procured from the farms in the vicinity and from the few houses in the business block On it are at least forty or fifty in all Hardly a private residence in town escaped fully four hundred buildings going down The Baptist Presbyterian and Catholic churches ALL StJITEBED A COMMON FATE The Ohio Southern ti Pan Handle narrow uage and Midland Railroad depots were blown to smithereens and every building in the vicinity was carried away making ingress in-gress or egress almost impossible As every wire within the circle of two miles is down it is utterly impossible to get accurate details of this catastrophe The only information that can be gotten are through an operator who tapped the wire two miles west of the town and is sitting in the heavy rain storm to work his instruments instru-ments The panicstricken people were taken completely unawares and fled from the trembling buildings COLUMBUS September 9The most alarm ing reports are current here regarding the loss of life and property at Washington Court almost I literally swopt it from tho earth It came i from tho northwest and broko upon tho town suddenly carrying everything before j it The tornado whirled up Court street I the main business thoroughfare and ruined I almost every building i Two or three bodies have been stumbled > upon in the middle of tho street where they wero I 8TIUCKEN DOWN BY FLYING BUICKS OR TIMI1EKS rime cellars of houses and every sort of refuge were filled with shivering people huddling together in a vain attempt to keep warm One baby in arms has died from exposure ex-posure The morning trains will carry plenty of assistance but strange to say nobody I no-body has thought of sending a special train i to the scene of tho catastrophe CINCINNATI September 9 Reports from I j i various parts of Ohio and Indiana show that yesterdays storm which devastated I i Washington Court House was wide spread I In Miami county Ohio its course was duo i oast At Cales llo in that county two j barns and several dwellings were blown I I down Three members of a family woro severely hurt On the other side of the I Miami river a grain house was blown away and tho Berry frame house was blown from I its foundation and wrecked The path of I tho storm was from forty rods to half a I mile wide At Cambridge City Indiana and I Dublin several houses were wrecked Advices from Circleville Ohio are that tho tornado passed through the country n I few miles south of that place unroofing houses and blowing down fences and trees I I A very heavy rain fell WASHINGTON COURT Housz Sept 91he i I cyclone which came upon this town last evening at 5 oclock almost completely demolished I de-molished it Not a single store facing the Central Square out of forty is left intact and I a majority of them are levelled About TWO HUNDRED BE8IDENOE1 ABE DKSTBOYED And the streets are filled with debris that it I is almost impossible to pass Sheriff I I Rankin ordered out tho militia which took I charge and helped to got order lout of the chaos All the gas went out j when the storm came and as I I the works were destroyed bonfires had to be I lit in the streets to give light for the search I I ers The total known to bo dead is five and I about fifty are injured Some houses were lifted bodily and carried several hundred I feet and then dashed to the ground with i terrific force I A relief committee is at work and all houses not destroyed are thrown open to the I homeless Farmers are coming by the dozens bringing food and bedding Every hotel I ho-tel bank church and business house in town is ruined The utmost desolation prevails I People coming in report finding debris ten i miles from the town Fully sixty persons are hur to many to I make it practicable to give names Time loss I will exceed a million
