Show A Wise Movement A gentleman who is unusually well posted in the affairs of Utah informs the DEMOCRAT on what he believes to be good authority that Mr PENROSE editor of the News is in Washington on a mission of peculiar importance He says that the position of President TAYLOR is quietly accepted as the right way out of trouble that men have had disquiet in mind and disturbance in business till they have concluded con-cluded that polygamy costs more than it comes to and that they will ask President Presi-dent CLEVELAND to grant a universal amnesty am-nesty in exchange for indisputable evidence evi-dence that the law is and will be hereafter here-after obeyed Of course this will bring before President Presi-dent CLEVELAND the hardest question of allone which will be a more difficult affair even than the continuance of silver coinagebut we believe that he will handle it wisely and there will probably be no disposition on the part of Utah Democrats to burden him with unnecessary unneces-sary advice His cabinet contains his constitutional advisers and there will be no unseemly haste nor any violation of Democratic principles in giving his answer an-swer If this is the mission of Mr PEN BOSE and he prosecutes it in spirit of fairness and patriotism we wish him the grandest success But back of this lies the real difficulty We nave already been too much represented repre-sented at Washington by persons claiming claim-ing to speak for the people of Utah The right thing now is to let the people of Utah speak for themselves Let priests and Federal officials alike take their hands off the people and let them undertake the duties of citizenship IVe want discussion open meetingsnew lines of thoughta decision to obey the law because loyalty p demands it The leaders have undertaken under-taken too much and the people have borne the disastrous onsequences Permanent Per-manent reform must spring from the people peo-ple themselves |
