Show THE OMINOUS YELLOW FLAG DiplitUcrin May Scourge the City Agai Filtli ami Xymotic Diseases Yesterday the City Quarantine Physician Physi-cian again hoisted the dreaded yellow flag significant that diphtheria is still in our I midst The case is in the Eighth Ward of a malignant type and is expected to terminate fatally Right in the immediate immedi-ate locality of the quarantined house there has existed and we believe still exists I a nuisance which calls for immediate abatement by the city officials the said nuisance being nothing less than a cattle corral of the most odorous stenchdealing class By no means however is this the only nuisance which it is incumbent upon our health officer whoever he may be to see abated Ditches are filled with refuse cesspools are reeking under the warm sun and in numerous places in the city the effluvium after a shower of rain would make the smell of a street in Naples respectable by comparison While it is not certain that filth is the cause of these zymotic diseases it is more than certain that in filth lies the propagation propaga-tion of the germs and the continuation of the source of disease and death The heavy mortality previous years in such contagious diseases as diphtheria and typhoid fever should be sufficient warning warn-ing to the public in regard to cleanliness Were each to practice the old Roman adae to keep his own door clean the insidious germs of these deadly plagues would find but little lodging in our pure mountain air where this is not done it is the duty of our city officials to see that measures of health are rigidly enforced and in cases where nuisances are to be abated if twere done then twere well that it were done quickly It is to be hoped that Salt Lake may escape the scourge of diphtheria if it does however how-ever it will in nowise be owing to the cleanliness of the city or the activity displayed dis-played by our health guardians |
