Show POLITICAL CLEANLINESS > N A new era has dawned upon the country coun-try It is the era of political cleanliness In the Democratic light of this new era the darkness of a Republican National triumph is impossible The success of the Democracy in 1884 was followed by a National revelation The true mission of a Republican form of government was unfolded A Democratic Dem-ocratic administration has proved to the Nation that all things are possible to the people And the glorious words in which this revelation is couched the undying phrase in which this possibility is announced is Political cleanliness Cleanliness of politics has been made synonomous with Democratic government govern-ment The corruption accumulating under un-der twentyfour years of Republican Republi-can misrule has been removed from the avenues of administration The wheels of government have been freed from the clogs of public and private plunder The cleansing has been thorough and complete This Administration Adminis-tration cleansing has gloriously reacted upon the Nation The purification of Administration has purified the politics of the country The Nation beholds the light and will never again tolerate the darkness of party corruption This purification and cleansing has been a Democratic task and henceforth the politics of Democracy are the politics of the Nation Political cleanliness has been a Democratic gift to the people and the people will hereafter see that the affairs of the Nation are held in trust by the party which has proved itself the Nations benefactor With the defeat of Republicanism at the polls always certain the Republican party is now engaged in making mak-ing that defeat doubly sure The two party leaders now before the country in rivalry for the Republican Presidential nomination are both feared by the people peo-ple They both represent the worst elements ele-ments of that system of political corruption corrup-tion overthrown at the polls in 1884 As President of the United States either of them would once again foul the now pure stream of National politics John Sherman is especially identified with the dark record of Republican Repub-lican power He has grown gray as one of the foremost f defenders of National dishonor dis-honor For long years he was a beneficiary benefi-ciary of National corruption He has ibeen the shameless exponent of sectionalism and his career ca-reer as the apostle of the Bloody Shirt is branded upon upon the history of the nation in characters charac-ters of infamy which even Times effacing fingers can never blot out Mr Blaines record is several shades lighter than that of Mr Sherman but it is still dark and threatening enough to make the people avoid him as they would avoid a pestilence pesti-lence In fact Republicanism is in itself but a political pestilence But the body politic has recovered from the dread disorder dis-order and the last lingering remnants of the contagion will be thrown off at the polls in 1888 Political cleanliness has come and the Nation will steadily strengthen its grasp upon the glorious 4 v dispensation |
