Show 1 BY THE BULLET ROUTE I I I I I A Short SharpCrack That Winds Up r Another Career Xlchacl Axelson Takes His Life By His hvn Hand The Rash Act Ascribed to Despondency Infidelity and Spiritualism Michael Axelson a tailor committed i suicide yesterday morning at half past 8 oclock He was 54 years of age and since emigrating to Salt Lake City fourteen four-teen years ago he had for the entire time made his home with Mr Strom berg From Mrs Betsy Stromberg at whose home the rash act was perpetrated a DEMOCRAT reporter learned the known facts of the case and TIlE PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE DEED Mr Axelson is described as having been a very methodical strictly honest but rather miserly sort of a man He was employed by the establishment of Hedberg Fernstrom merchant tailors and for the past four months had complained com-plained at times of sickness from the effects of rheumatism His conduct had been strange of late and on two different occasions once last March he made at tnrviiite in take lllS lifo but WaS WC vented from so doing by some restraining hand His condition of body affected his mind to some considerable extent and lie became despondent frequently EXPRESSING STRONG DESIRES TO DIE Which were carried out yesterday by his own hand When the report of the fatal shot was heard the people of the house and for a block away rushed to the scene to learn the cause of alarm The door of Axel sons small room up stairs wag found locked but Master Stromberg a boy about 12 years of age with more uncontrollable uncon-trollable curiosity tuul courage than was possessed by the older ones present climbed up by the side of the house raised the window and there flaw the dying man STIUGOLTXCJ OJ THE nED Ho hurried down the door was burst open and Axelson was found gasping in death with the revolver 1iisp tightly in his hand his finger still pressing the trigger with a determined grip Dr Borroughs was summoned as was also Dr Anderson but neither being at home it was discovered to be too late to give assistance to the unfortunate man and at 11 oclock am he expired without ever speaking a word or leaving a written line in explanation of his suicide The bullet bul-let entered his scalp about one inch back of the middle of the right ear iL then took a downward course for threefourths of an inch where it entered the head passed through and loJged in the left cheek bone The revolver must have been placed close against the head sTIlE s-TIlE SKULL WAS COMPLETELY CRUSHED With the terrific shot and what is singularly singu-larly strange is that the hair was not noticeably singed The deceased was of medium build sandy hair and beard slightly sprinkled with gray Through his industrious habits and scrupulously careful living he had accumulated considerable property Besides 1700 in Zions Savings Bank lie owned a part interest with Mr 1eter I sen in a mine in Big Cottonwood He wore a fine gold watch and chain and this property lie once informed a friend he wanted divided among two brothers residing in Sweden and a sister sup posed to be in Wisconsin but formerly living at Grand Rapids Michigan The remains were taken in charge by City Sexton Taylor from whose under taking establishment the funeral is announced an-nounced to take place this afternoon Mr Axelson belonged to no church but rather tended to infidelity with a tinctur ing of Spiritualism controlling his views at times |
