Show I TIMBER CULTURE t I Mill men and tie cutters are beginng to experience some trouble on account of i i the orders of tho Secretary of the Into1 I nor to Receiver Wallace and to Timber I Agent Evans Their obedience to orders i necessarily be an annoyance and inconvenience I in-convenience to many and a hardship to some it may bo still they are hut agents I j of the Govornmentand the people should remember that they have no choice in I the matter when proceeding against mill j men and tie cutters The timber question ques-tion in the West is an important one and one to which it would be well for the people peo-ple to turn their attention The laws of I the United Stares for the protection of j timber and forests were passed no doubt ito ito i-to protect the immense forests of the Eastern and Middle States where there was more good saw timber to the acre than to the square mile in the West and it may almost bo said without exaggeration there is more i timber to the acre in the East than to the townsite in the West Granting all this still it must be remembered that i the laws relating to timber include the j timber of the West as well as that of the East It was once thought that the i r > > fj i H > t iZfi I United States could never exhaust the I timber supply but experience has proven Ihafsuch is not the case and that it will I not be so very many years before the great pineries of Michigan and Wisconsin Wiscon-sin will be exhausted if the present rate of felling trees iscontinued The South i is still a source of supply and in some of I the Southern States the forests are still ast and virgin but they too will go as have gone the forests of the North How is the country to save itself in the matter of timber for all purposes The United States will be compelled to follow the example of the older countries of Europe notably England and France and plant their forests this method eventually is the only one by which the timber question ques-tion can he solved At the last session of the Legislature I the Governor in his message recommended recom-mended that one day in the year be declared a legal holiday to be called Arbor Day for the purpose of planting trees but the Legislature for some reason rea-son or no reason declined to do anything These Arbor Days in the East aro as popular as May Day in the England of former days Experience has proven that the climate and soil of Utah are well adapted for the growth of many of the hard wood trees of the East The largest experience in tho growth of hard wood trees in Utah has been with tho black walnut but the white and black ash grow luxuriantly here as well as the walnut and such being the case there is no reason rea-son why the live oak and the hickory should not thrive well here Any man who has a farm of twenty or thirty acres can plant one acre to timber and in a few years he can be independent of Government Gov-ernment or any one else for his timber supply and such a man has the satisfaction satisfac-tion of knowing that he who plants a tree hands down a blessing to posterity In the canyons around on the banks of the streams which course through them is a splendid place for the planting of trees As one goes in to the canyons and sees naught but tho dead stumps of once living trees and no young trees growing the thought immediately comes that man robs nature and returns her nothing The denudation of the hills and mountains around the sources of the water supply also means a diminished water supply The people of Utah eventually will have to plant their own timber as well as their own grain if they expect to have any and the sooner they begin to plant timber trees the better The trees when they reach maturity will be a source of profit and also a source of pleasure and beauty things no less valuable than timber for commercial purposes Even if the Government shall permit the timber on tho mountains to be hewn still the supply is limited and when it is gone what will the people do There is a future as well as a present and those who never look to its wants and needs are living a hand to mouth life |
