Show HOME INDUSTRIES The Subject Again Taken Up by the Committee on Manufactures of the Chamber of Commerce An Excellent Paper on the Subject Read by Mr Sam Levy The Chamber Cham-ber to Take the Initiative I We Do Not Patronize Our Own Industries We Cannot Hope for Others to Do So Yesterday afternoon at tho second meeting of the Committee on Manufactories < Manufac-tories of the Salt Lake Board of Trade the subject discussed at the previous meeting was further considered It was decided that a an earnest of their desire to stand in with all new enterprises of home industry they would start in handling hand-ling the home productions of the manufactories manu-factories already in existence The meeting was informal but was nevertheless earnest and enthusiastic Before the close Mr Sam Levy read the following paper Chairman and Gentlemen Much has been said in relation to the matter of fostering and building up home industries in-dustries For one I am personally interested in-terested in this matter but above my personal interest I place that which I have at the present time and always have had l in the welfare of our city and Territory Many complaints are made that those who should give material aid and strength to our industries do not stand by them as they should How many are there who claiming to have a deep and abiding interest in such matters mat-ters can show that their socalled interest is any thing more than a wordy one having hav-ing its foundation in mere platitudes with none of that substantial aid which comes from patronage How many are there who show by example that they desire this country to grow and become strong in its manufacturing industries in-dustries Mr Chairman and gentleman of this Board there should be a reformation reforma-tion among us Let the welltodo set the example to the people generally and show them that what is made here is good enough for the wealthy and the people 1 soon catch the infection and where one man is employed in the manufacture manufac-ture of any article there will in a short time be a hundred Further than this i we do not patronize our own industries we can not hope for others to do so We must aid them and with the assurance of support at home the live and energetic ener-getic man feels that lie can branch out and reach that success which will surely attend his efforts Do you not think Mr Chairman and gentlemen that our leading mercants and jobbers can do much to assist the industries which have been struggling along for years if they will I think so j and we must aid each other until we can stand alone There should be a pride with all this The manufacturer should be proud to successfully success-fully compete with outside competition or competition at home The merchants should feel a pride in being able i to show goods of home production which will bear any test that may be I given them The people should be proud to patronize an industry that affords employment em-ployment to the workingman the I mechanic and the artisan Then the whole people can with satisfaction say I These factories are the work of our hands j wo were present at the birth and I have watched their growth we have strengthened them and stood by them and now that they are the pride of this intermountain region we can congratulate congratu-late ourselves that we have had a hand in bringing about this result The thousands thou-sands of people employed therein have their homes with us they spend their money with us and the whole country prospers Gentlemen there is nose no-se talking we cannot sit backand urge the people to patronize the struggling industries in-dustries while we make no effort to strengthen them 0111 selves Let the members of this board set Hie example I themselves which they would have others oth-ers follow We can do no less than try the medicine we would prescribe for others oth-ers This done and an earnest effort un ceasincly to place our products prominently promi-nently before the public and I for one shall be amply satisfied with the result SAM LEVY SALT LAKE Crrv June 10th 1887 |
