Show t tL I THE STOCKMEN Meeting of the Cattle and Hors Growers Today Hostilities Commenced Between the Two Factions It has long been known that one or two stockgrowers conventions would be held i in this city this week but as to the objects ob-jects or nature of these gatherings the public has been kept in ignorance The I I mere announcement however was sufficient I suffi-cient to bring to the city stockmen from I all parts of the Territory as well as from I Wyoming Idaho and Nevada A convention I con-vention was called to meet in the Walker Opera House at 10 oclock this morning and a DEMOCRAT reporter who put in his appearance at the appointed hour found the ilOuse pervaded by an Egyptian darkness dark-ness and not a solitary cowboy or horse grower present Dr Faust and the Fire mans band arrived shortly afterwards and the house began to present pre-sent an appearance of liveliness Owing to the small number present it was decided not to call the convention until after the arrival of the train from the north and the band in Paul Mulloys handsome drag was sent through the streets to work up an enthus fiasm i The few stockmen who were loitering I around the lobby entrance seemed to possess pos-sess a very vague idea as to why they were in attendance or what the object of the convention was A Wyoming cattleman cattle-man freely expressed his opinion as to what should be done In Wyoming he said we have a Territorial Association Associa-tion and have succeeded in securing slaws s-laws as we found necessary to protect our interests and that is what should be done in Utah I Dr Faust stated to a reporter that the objectpf the convention was to consolidate consoli-date the eighteen county organizations into a Territorial Association and to harmonize all the opposing factions The convention was called to order shortly short-ly after 11 oclock and a temporary organization organ-ization was effected by the election of Dr Faust as temporary chairman Dr Faust in taking the chair made a brief speech expressing his pleasure and pride in calling call-ing to order the first convention of stockmen stock-men ever held in the Rocky Mountains Utah was the first Territory settled and she had the right to hold the first meeting of cattle and horse growers This was not a convention I I vention of any one man or of any faction fac-tion but was called under authority of the National Association The speaker reviewed the benefits derived from the I National Association and stated that its great aim was to unite all the stock interests inter-ests of every part of the United States east west north and south I The Utah stockmen had been author I ized and requested by General Hunter to organize themselves into a Territorial Association One of the objects of the organization would be to protect its members against the depredations of thieves From the amount of stealing done annually in this Territory it would pay the stockmen of Utah to wake up and move in the matter The beef products of Utah were in excess ex-cess of the consumption and the stockmen stock-men should find some outlet for their surplus It now costs 19 to ship an average steer to Chicago which leaves avery a-very small profit The stockmen should i ask the railroads to give them an outlet I and show the railroads it was to their interest in-terest to do so Dr Faust strongly urged the advantages of shipping dressed meats instead of live stock The laws affecting the cattle interests should also be considered The present estray law of the Territory was neither equitable nor just Under the Territorial statutes small patches of grain were allowed al-lowed to monopolize thousands of acres of fine grass lands A committee should be appointed to labor with the next Territorial Ter-ritorial Legislature and secure needed legislation I B Q Knowlton was then elected temporary tem-porary secretary and Chas French assistant as-sistant All cattle and horse growers sheep men were not included were then invited to enroll themselves The following names were recorded A J Stewart Abram Hatch J C i Rich E D Woolley Yo H Segmiller Israael Evans E B Tripp S S Vorth I ington J A Bean S S Howts A Farr Joseph Hatch C D Brenten Wm I Harris N B Duncan B W Williams David Murdock S 31 Lovendahl and D I H Hillhouse Abram Hatch was elected permanent chairman B B Knowlton permanents permanent-s and Chas French assistant Mr Hatch in taking the chair stated that he trusted this convention represented repre-sented a majority of the cattle and horse interests of the Territory The stock interests in-terests were second to none in the Territory Ter-ritory except the mining interests Al I though there were other factions this I convention was the only authorized body and he trusted one of the results of this j convention would be a harmonizing of I these factions C J Brain was elected shorthand reporter re-porter A committee of five was appointed to prepare an order of business and report this afternoon Following are the committee com-mittee A J Faust J A Bean J H Segmiller J C Rich and E D Woolley A J Stewart was elected first vice president and Mr Deikens of Wyoming second vicepresident Mr Deikens declined i de-clined to serve and A Farr was elected The convention then adjourned until 2 oclock this afternoon Dodgers bearing the following announcement an-nouncement were distributed at the door as the crowd was passing out Remember Remem-ber the meeting of the Utah Cattle and Horse Growers Association tomorrow I Friday April 3d in the City Hall at 10 oclock a m All parties interested in I the stock question are invited These dodgers created no small amount e cr of astonishment The general impression impres-sion had been that the convention now in session was a meeting of the horse and cattle growers but these dodgers conveyed the idea that such was not the case It is learned by investigation that the faction whJch meets in City Hall tomorrow tomor-row is led by exMayor Jennings and Joel Grover who ignore the Opera House crowdclaiming the latter do not fully represent rep-resent the stock interests of the Territory As an offset to this the Opera House convention claims to be acting by and under authority of the National Stock Growers Association Messrs Jennings and Grover we understand claim to number the heaviest stockmen of the Territory among their followers and it is predicted their convention tomorrow tomor-row will be more largely attended than was that of Dr Faust today to-day The Doctor however is confident of an increased attendance at the Opera House tomorrow Some interesting developments de-velopments are looked for but the general gen-eral impression seems to be that Dr Fausts crowd will U get away with the other faction One point of difference between the two ib that the Jennings Grover faction favors a leasing of public lands to grazers while the other does I not I |
