Show = = = w A LAGERBEER COXYESTLOX TIjc TnrciiiyFiftU Annual HJectinu ot American BSrcwcrs in New 1eirlt i NEW XOKK May 21rh twentyfifth annual an-nual convention of the United States Brewers Brew-ers Association is in session in this city Representatives from nearly every brewery in the country will be present and the quarter quar-ter centennial of the association will be celebrated in a manner entirely compatible with the size the festive proclivities and the wealth of the great society of THE KNIGHTS OF OA3IBBINUS Last years convention was held at Boches ter and it wag there that they decided to hold the meeting of 1885 in the metropolis Over 80 per cent of all the beer brewed in the United States is represented in its membership mem-bership Its obiects are the protection and advancement of the beer interests The commers winch took place Tuesday night is a peculiarlY German institution and in the fatherland confined mostly to student circles It cannot bo described It must be seen to bo appreciated It is a formal for-mal revelry in which lager beer bears the most prominent office Songs and speeches are also features The commers of Tuesday Tues-day night was a gigantic one It lasted until 1 oclock and most of its participants went homo in carriages A special committee charged with the gathering of STATISTICS AEOUT BEEIJ Hoport among other things that the consumption con-sumption of lagerbeer in this country according ac-cording to data furnished by records of the United States revenue authorities increased over 400000 barrels during the year ending April 1st 1885 They show that this increase in-crease in the popularity of beer as a beverage has caused a marked decrease in the consumption con-sumption of alcoholic liquors and they deduct de-duct from these facts the conclusion that drunkenness has been correspondingly less prevalent All the reports of the committees commit-tees some of which are very elaborate are printed in both German and English and distributed The convention adjourned at about noon and during the afternoon the delegates visited the different breweries in the city and vicinity The delegates do not go in a body but split up Into small parties some visiting one brewery and some another All the establishments put on a gala dress for the reception to the visitors The decorations deco-rations and preparations in one large brewery in ihis city cost over rl 00 In the evening the theatres concertgardens mid other places of interest in the city were visited This evening the Terrace Garden will be the scene of festivities A banquet at which between 1000 and 1100 people will sit down will be provided It is to be the largest banqur or held in New York To make asing large enough to accommodate accom-modate tho v t assembly tho partition now Standing between the spacious dining room of Terrace Garden and the main auditorium audi-torium will be cut away and the whole will be made into one grand room Music will bofumished by Arbuckles band and THE DINNER WITH THE SPEECHES Will last well into the small hours Tho menu is not yet ready for publication Besides Be-sides the brewers many prominent citizens of New York and vicinity including Mayor Grace are expected to be present Nsw YOIIK May 21The Brewers Convention Conven-tion concluded its sessions today and ad journed to meet in Sail Francisco in May 1SSG The committee on restrictive legislation legisla-tion reported the requests for aid from the brewcis of Kansas and Iowa The committees commit-tees recommendation that the requests for aid from Kansas and Iowa be granted when test castfs were carried to tho Court of Appeals Ap-peals were adopted by the convention |
