Show A Remarkable Prisoner Dr Goerson says a Philadelphia telegram tele-gram who will be hanged next Thursday for poisoning his wife and motherinlaw and who has been twice sentenced to death is doing missionary work in his prison cell in rather an odd way He frequently amuses himself catching large roaches and pasting on their backs little bits of paper on which he has written passages of scripture These were his missionary roaches One day he caught a big fellow with an inscription on its back which he had placed there six months previously On turning it over he found another slip of paper pasted on its underside whch had been placed there by afellowprisoner Dr Goerson has an ingenious arrangement arrange-ment to enable him to read at night As there is neither gasjet nor lamp allowed al-lowed in his cell he was obliged to devise de-vise some means to aid him to pass away the time in reading lie often asked for a mirror but the superintendent would not permit his counsel to comply with his request as it was against the rules However Goerson obtained a sheet of tin and after brightening it he placed it outside his window at such an angle as to catch the rays of light from a gaslamp in the kitchen yard sixty feet away from I his cell These rays were then concentrated concen-trated inside of his cell by means of a magnifyingglass and by placing his book or paper near the glass he obtained light to read by Ever since his l incarceration five ears ago and until within a few weeks ago when he was notified of the refusal of the board of pardons to commute his sentence sen-tence to imprisonment for life Goersen bore his confinement unusually well He always seemed to think that something some-thing would happen to save him from the gallows Now he realizes that he must die and is making every preparation accordingly ac-cordingly Ho spends much of his tune in reading the Bible and various commentaries com-mentaries on that book having gone through at least twenty of these books |
