| Show THE DEMOCRATS AT SANDY A Rousing IUcetiii Last Nlfflit The Speeches anti Sociability off the Occasion Last night the Democratic campaigners held a ratification meeting at Sandy Nearly 1000 people turned out to listen many ladies being present The meeting I was held on the platform of the Utah Central station There were present from this city Mr and Mrs A L Williams I Wil-liams and daughter Clarie Miss Eva B Stoakes Messrs S Bamberger W Van Cot John 11 Young Fred Kesler and a I DEMOCRAT reporter Among the Dromi I nent citizens of Sandy were Mr and Mrs C J Schmidt Mr and Mrs T E Marriott Mr and Mrs Arthur Gushing Mr Tilliman superintendent of the tfingo Mr and Mrs Jim Nelson and Mr and Mrs Rudd Mr Harry Haynes Har brought up a carriage full of ladies and gentlemen from Murray and many others came from adjacent points The campaign band arrived from Salt Lake about sun down and serenaded the town till 8 30 when the members sat down to a lunch by courtesy of JMr T E uarriott A few minutes before 9 oclock the assembly was called to order and Ur Marriott elected chairman and J H Tempest secretary The first speaker in troduced was Mr Van Cott who elo quently addressed the people on the ssues uul of the day He referred to the condition h condion of our statute books and I showed how the Peoples bQksV ser ant had by their incompetent made a record unworthy the representa i tives of a free tyes people and a Territory such as we live in The intelligence of I to the think people he appealed to asking them I act and vote as becomes a sovereign people Mr Fred Kessler followed in a convinc ing and earnest speech in which he plainly set forth the condition of our Ter I condion ritory what she i and what she ought 011 of right to ea free and sovereign state the keystone in the arch of Statesthat 1 thE v Sttsthat I I reaches from the Atlantic to the shore of the Golden Gate Mr A L Williams was the YiiamR next i speaker Mr Williams made a brief but bref pointed speech He stood before the pee pIe a a nominee to the Legislature po would if elected at the coming election do his duty to the best of JiiS ability and Knowledge for his constituents ind and knowledg the consttuents Territory at Large He pledged the balance of the ticket to do thesame They are afrmnen of honor position in fluence and intelligence and they would if the people in their wisdom and bv their will ancsuffrageplace them in the halls I I f I of one Legislature work as become faithful faith-ful servants of a selfgoverning people Mr John lf Young was the last speaker Mr Young made a powerful effort argumentative and eloquent lie appealed to the intelligence of the people The people of this Territory have reared their pople and kept themselves in ignorance ig-norance of politics and public affairs They have not asserted and claimed their rights as American citizens Young men have been kept out of public life unless fortunate enough to be born within the circle of a favored few Any effort made to check free speech and control personal and independent action in the exercise of a citizens 1 privileges is an infringement of the liberty of every man Utahs condition demanded a change in the various departments de-partments of the Territorial government over which the people have control and such changes must come sooner or later I is for the people to say how long these very muchneeded changes shall be postponed post-poned and when the dawn of a brighter and fairer day shall give vigor to our political life and put Utah in her legitimate legiti-mate place in the Union of these United States He urged the people no longer to give their suffrage to a party that had proved so unworthy their trust During the evening the gay of heart and light of foot among the fair ladies and their gentlemen friends of Sandy arranged ar-ranged for I dancing party after the meeting meet-ing The party was made possible by the energy and generosity of Mr C J Schmidt and his accomplished and vivacious viva-cious wife Dancing commenced before 1 oclock and continued till long after midnight much t the enjoyment of all who participated This sociaoiiity together to-gether with the generosity of the gentlemen gentle-men during the whole evening shows that in Sandy there is a society of people who know how to entertain and enjoy life themselves Members of the band furnished furn-ished the music and made the evenings enjoyment better than it otherwise could have been The meeting and the dance were splendid splen-did successes and everybody in attendance attend-ance enthusiastic and delighted The meeting was the means of laying before the people the principles of Democracy I and the party served to bring the people i together socially and to become acquainted ac-quainted one with another and Sandy will therefore poll a strong vote for the Democratic ticket and thus do a much for the cause of good government and the advancement of Democratic principles a has been done for the enjoyment of those I who visited the town |
