Show t I n4 Dr nqitu I Sh c JfUppUUlgu Jjt Xi ut Nt A very Battering nudlonco was neeam igd at the W all r Opera House lat oypning fo wines the cQjpmenceipont exercises of this years graduating class from the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute Before 8 oclock a heavy shower came up which interfered with many coming who would otherwise have been present The house was brightly lighted and most beautifully arranged for the comfort of all present Superintendent Millspaugh conducted the programme throughout and opened the exercises with an anthem by the school novo II A Newell then offered prayer in an inspiring manner The DEMOCRAT would be pleased to give a full account of each exercise hut being unable to do so a brief synopsis of the highly creditable entertainment must suffice Miss Winnifred Soule read in a scholarly schol-arly manner an essay entitled Jacobs Ladder The ascent from the bottom I round through all the struggles incident I to life until the top is reached was beautifully beau-tifully portrayed Miss Soule showed careful thought throughout her perform anqe anqeMiss llss E J Kelley then rendered a piano solo which was much applauded I Miss Mary C Parsons delivered an essay on The Angel in the Stone The subject was well handled and in a striking strik-ing illustration many persons like unto blocks of rough marble are passed unnoticed un-noticed by when but the transforming ouch of the chisel is required to bring to sight the hidden beauty and character concealed Many excellent thoughts were presented which it is regretted can not I be given The piano duet Whirlwind by Prof Krouse and Mr Mcintyre was encored en-cored and kindly responded to Miss Mamie Morris presented an essay from the subject Corner Stones Speaking Speak-ing of the importance of corner stones to the foundations of buildings Miss Morris very appropriately referred in her excellent excel-lent essay to the corner stones of true character as being truth purity charity and justice Miss Daisy D Woods in anable man mer gave an essay on Triumph of Light Over Darkness and from this well chosen subject the doing away of darkness by light and ignorance i by intelligence were beautifully pictured The subject permits of many fine and true sayings and Miss Woods did full justice to the opportunities offered Miss E J Kelley sang Hell Come No Mo e accompanied by l > rof Krouse Mr Charles A Short presented the closing performance of the class of five graduates He is a young man of character char-acter with many bright prospects awaiting await-ing his efforts His oration on Patriotism Patriot-ism evidenced the work of a diligent student and he rendered it in a pleasing style Superintendent lIlsp ugh here introduced intro-duced Juoge Goodwin who spoke in high terms of Prof Coyner the founder of the Collegiate Institute and of his effectual labors in helping to mould the character of many young people for future usefulness useful-ness In setting forth the many vicissitudes vicissi-tudes and opportunities to be experienced by the graduates Mr Goodwin spoke the truth fervently and enjoined each of them to go on with their true purposes Rev K G McNeice the President of the Boardthen presented the longsought for prizes In awarding the diplomas the class of 85 were moved with his touching remarks After this presentation presenta-tion was finished the graduates loaded with basket of beautiful flowers and accompanied ac-companied by some eighty warm friends repaired to the residence of Mr McNeice where a reception was held and congratulations congrat-ulations with future wishes were extended extend-ed t the graduates of the fourth commencement com-mencement of the Collegiate Institute |
