| Show j f > v FAREWELL TO MRS COHEN 1 I A Brilliant Event Preceding That I JLndyJB Departure for Buttc Montana A farewell party was given at the Kahn residence on Saturday evening in honor of Mrs B Cohen previous to her departure de-parture for B tc Montana which place the lady has selected for her future home The many friends present proved that Mrs Cohen during the twenty years of her life in this commnnity had endeared herself to all who had come in contact with her and many were the regrets expressed ex-pressed on account of her leaving About fifty couples were present of which Mrs Cohen and her children formed the centre group Mr Fred Simon in a very feeling address ad-dress recounted the character and many virtues of the honored guest in the following fol-lowing remarks I i to be sincerely regretted that from all the gentlemen present your humble servant ser-vant was selected to make a few remarks extolling the virtues and good qualities of the lady in whose honor we have assembled here this evening No matter how valuable the material may be which you give to a artisan whether I be the marble of Carara or precious stones yet in their uncut state unless the workman is skilled in his art his work will be but that of a novice and its deficiencies perceptible to even the most untrained eye Most valuable material have you indeed given me to shape my vcrk from and would I had the power to maLe it assume the form that my mind conceives but lacks the eloquence elo-quence to fully so express I know of nothing which deserves more praise than the raising of a number of chi dren and to raise them so that they will beth be-th pride of their parents and a credit the community in which they were raised Al present here know the responsibility attached to such a task But a few weeks ago a gentleman gen-tleman who has one or two children and avery a-very prosperous business to draw his income from remarked When I think of the responsibility re-sponsibility and care attached to the raising and supporting of my family my hair almost stands on end Like a flash my thoughts reverted to our dear friend and I thought if this man finds it such a task what must her lifes work have been and still be without with-out the aid of that person who i generally considered the prop and mainstay of the family Relying upon the knowledge that her work was almost Godlike she never for one moment mo-ment flinched or swerved from her task of duty And nobly has she accomplished this task which Providence saw fit to give into her charge gyO I reading the history of Rome we know of no sentiment which inspires the human heart to noble acts more than the answer given by Cornelia the mother of the Grace to some Roman ladies Visited by a number of them who took great delight in showing her their fine ornament and jewelery they finally begged of her to be permitted to see her jewels Cornelia called her two boys all that had remained t her of twelve children and smiling sweetly sweet-ly said These are my jewels I it to be wondered at that under the training and guidance of such a mother the children grew up to fill the highest offices which the Republic of Rome could confer upon them The comparison between our honored lady and Cornelia is not at all out of place No jewels glitter from her fingers or flash upon her throat to dazzle the eye Her jewels are her children I had the good fortune to be present at the wedding ceremony of my esteemed friend Emanuel Kahn t a daughter daugh-ter of this lady I must confess that I watched the mother more than I did the daughter Such a blooming countenance overflowing hi its happiness I have rarely if ever beheld and at that moment the thought flashed through her mind I am a hundredfold repaid for all I did I said to mother myself Well done good and faithful With all her care for the family this good lady always found time to devote to charitable charit-able work No poor person ever called without with-out his or her wants being relieved to the sick she was a tender nurse and wherever she went peace followed in her wake I once listened to some words of advice she gave to a newlymarried lady and while the words were not intended for me I eagerly listened to all that was said and made it my business to impress the remarks upon mv mind 1 i fear I have taken up more of your time than I should have allotted to myself bu my heart was with tho subject 1 have to say our loss in your leaving u will be another an-other communitys gain To us remains the glimmer of hope that the remaining ties here will yet prove attraction sufficient to draw you once more into our midst The toilets of the ladies were most exquisite ex-quisite and to mention them all would take up more space than can be devoted to it today A sumptuous repast was spread and the manner in which the ice cream cake and other delicacies disappeared disap-peared proved that the ladies who had the party in charge understood their business busi-ness most efficiently At 12 oclock the party began to disperse The affair was one of the most enjoyable ever witnessed the only regret heard being that Salt Lake City would soon lose one of its most estimable ladies |
