Show Students debate Iraq in in symposium 4 Isa Isaiah al Prows Prows Contributing Writer Oil or democracy was the question facing students who entered the Student Center Oak Room on April 6 to further discuss their thoughts on what is happening happening happening hap hap- pening in Iraq Earlier this semester on March 2 students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents were able to convey their opinions during an activity sponsored by the Thayne Center Event coordinator Anita Brown felt that the last meeting was such a success that it needed to be I received lots of positive feedback that this is a worthwhile topic and should be further discussed said Brown During the first fast event not only did people people people peo peo- participate but they enjoyed the subject subject subject sub sub- matter The event started at 1 pm p.m. and lasted until pm p.m. Refreshments were served as students pulled questions out of a bowl If discussions became too heated they moved on to another ques ques- tion With a lot of the same faces attending the event students greeted each other with smiles and handshakes I 1 knew there would be a lot of the same people said Ahmad a previous attendee and native Iraqi But ButI I also knew there would be a lot of new people and I want to share my experiences experiences experiences with them Even with the attendance down from the first event the students who showed up were pleased I go to a lot of stuff on campus said Makeda Meeks a International Studies major But this was the best I Iwas Iwas Iwas was mentally challenged and stimulated by students Impressed by the organization that Brown used for the event Meeks thinks it should be used for every subject that's discussed on campuses Another student Jennifer Stephens personally thanked Brown for her time and effort she put into the event Debate Cont if on Page 8 I a Debate Cont from front The fact is you cant can't hear too many different view points or hear too much information about such an important subject said Stephens Attendance was the only noticeable difference between the two sessions The marketing for the event wasn't as good at atit atit atit it was before said Service Council President Scott Anderson But the discussions went well welland welland welland and it allowed me to see the other students' students ions In continuous efforts to help students become civically engaged Brown displayed a flyer on the tables of Ms Bushra Jamil's radio station Hers was the first women's radio station in Iraq and is dedicated to Democracy Freedom and a Better Future Jamil invites all to attend her free presentations about the life of Iraqi women while she is here in Utah The first fast will be Wednesday April 19 at 7 pm p.m. in the Downtown Public Library Thursday April 20 20 at noon in Women's Resource Center on the campus of the University of Utah and April 21 at noon in the Hinckley Institute of Politics |
