Show Winners share talents during Folio reading Kathryn Jones The Globe Something powerful happens when a writer reads their work Suddenly every listener in the room is whisked away sometimes sometimes sometimes some some- times to a place they have never been before At a recent reading of The Folio literary magazine supported by the Department of English and the Student Media Council listeners were taken through the process of aging new beginnings freedom death healing healing healing heal heal- ing and imagination through inspiring poetry and short story All winners had obviously taken painstaking care to make their presentation the best possible Though some readers were nervous suggesting that they might forget a line or stumble stumble stumble ble over their words they waited waited waited wait wait- ed anxiously for their turn to share their work Besides a vocalization of writers writers' writers writers' writers writers' writ writ- ers' ers work various art mediums were displayed representing images of nature and figure aswell as aswell aswell well as subjects including time and place Whether students were sharing poetry prose or displaying their work for others to see each had astory a astory story to tellI tellI tellI tell I started writing after taking poetry Laura Michie author of the poem Second Life said I had no idea I 1 could write I 1 was su surprised Adam Haver author of the i Poem VP tT r jda I lits that Ct he L pulled his poem from a group of others he wrote in high school Haver began writing in the eighth grade because of the positive comments he received from his teacher Mrs Wright She knew how to make meuse me meuse meuse use my talents he said because shed she'd point them out to me met me M Mr r f 1 r ze CD CI u c c J JE E JE E o u CD oX 10 J N C The 2005 fall semester Folio hit the stands with art and written works from students Art work above by Brittney Montgomery also donned the cover as a new addition to the literary magazine design Patrick Kelly author of the critical essay The Freedom of an Hour has been writing for 20 years He actually prefers writing fiction but says he has discovered that his critical writing is bet bet- ter When it comes to art Katherine Wood artist of Geisha Girl a work in pencil suggested it takes a long time to become a professional artist While While-it it took her only three days to finish her work she says she needed something in front of her herto herto herto to draw it that she just wouldn't have been able to complete this work and others she has done strictly out of her head Her prop this time A ceramic statue Her study Three art classes to date with more on the horizon Following a brief introduction by Folio editor Jeremy Remy six authors read their work captivating ing an audience of approximately 40 which included students parents parents parents par par- and siblings Punch and cookies followed as well as an opportunity to view students' students art j work and talk with the winners I Volume VIl VII 2 Number Number fal issue of Folio titled can be picked up ata at ata ata a newsstand The magazine magazine magazine maga maga- zine is free z |
