Show SLL gets lesson in becoming better leaders Lockhart Contributing Writer Student leaders of Student Life Leadership office not only get training in the office but also in the classroom Gordon Wilson Director of Student Life Leadership and LaShawn Williams Coordinator of Leadership Diversity are teaching a class on leadership leadership leadership lead lead- MGT 2990 Through the semester many speakers have a chance to share with the class some of their personal personal per per- leadership experiences Even though this class consists of student leaders their behavior doesn't always reflect this As speakers are lecturing lec- lec lecturing lecturing lec lec- turing sometimes the students arent aren't paying attention They are writing notes and softly speaking to each other Williams gave the students the opportunity to give feedback on how to tomake tomake tomake make the class more applicable to their needs after she had analyzed their lack of interest towards the speakers The students wanted more interaction with the speakers They wanted chairs in a circle so it would give the speakers a chance to sit down and get to know them instead of standing at a podium and lecturing Also they wanted more hands on activities Once these changes were made some of the students' students behavior continued to concern the instructors Therefore Williams attempted to restore the focus of the class during its monthly debriefing debriefing debriefing debrief debrief- ing session by putting together a detailed packet containing all of the October speakers There were questions questions questions ques ques- related to their presentations that helped the students analyze and apply what they learned She divided the class into four groups and each group was given a page to answer with questions questions questions ques ques- about a speaker The groups worked together to answer all of the questions Every group had to present their answers to their peers But Williams had assigned roles to each of the groups as a symbolic example of how they bad had been behaving towards the guest speakers There was a talkative group a paper throwing group an attentive group and an authoritative group As the first group presented the rest of the class acted accordingly to Williams' Williams varied instructions during their individual group discussions After this experience the students walked away with a clearer perception on how to be strong and effective lead lead- ers and how to behave when a speaker is presenting I liked it because it focused on classroom classroom classroom class class- room etiquette I look at my position in inthe inthe inthe the school like a formal duty to the school and the leadership class should be a like business-like atmosphere said Jordan Thomas Student Senator We learned a lot Williams ended the class by explaining explaining explaining explain explain- ing to the students why she conducted the class differently My passion is for you as student leaders Yes I 1 may be hard on you and andI I 1 do it because I 1 know you all can do better I 1 know you are better said Williams |
