Show Nobody puts the Swing Club in a corner Jesse Dolce Contributing Writer It is a social activity that combines exercise with meeting new people and having having having hav hav- ing fun said Bradford BJ Woolston president of Swing Club He is a person that lives life to the fullest each moment I have been very lucky to find this said Woolston I can relate to kids he said He is studying social work and wants to become a counselor in a junior or high school He didn't have an easy life growing up His parents parents parents par par- divorced when he was in seventh grade He had to goto go goto goto to a new school I was getting getting getting get get- ting in trouble and wearing baggy pants He said He graduated high school and went into the military I had it set fly jets play volleyball and get the girl What else is there Woolston said He joined the military because he wanted to be like Tom Cruise in Top Gun Swing Club Cont on Page 3 rr r Z Zwing I Club cot Swi wing Swing g Club Cont from front Then he found out that he would have to have a degree to become a pilot The last thing I was going to do after high school was four years of college he said He joined the infantry and was in the marines for four years from 1998 In September of 1999 he learned that he had cancer in a lump of tissue in his neck The cancer was removed and all that remains is a scar on the side of his neck The cancer turned out to be not fatal I am very lucky he said Woolston enrolled at and started dancing spring semester of 2004 I was just looking for an extra class to take he said He liked country country country coun coun- try western music so he signed up for Country Western Swing Dance class It has turned into a real addiction said Woolston He dances six times a week He he gets up early everyday so can set up posters for the club o or he spends time shopping f around for good music music I am always looking for good music said Woolston He likes to listen to music of all kinds I listen to music now that I 1 would have never even thought about for dance music he said Its not just country western music he said Swing Club dances to music styles from Marvin Gaye to AC Students would be interested interested interested inter inter- ested in the social interaction Its a win-win win situation said Woolston We are not a huge group so it is really easy to make friends said Woolston Last semester we had a guy that only came one time and the girl that he met had only come three times and they met here at swing club and now they are married said Woolston We all started out as non- non dancers said Pam Genovesi advisor to swing club She said dance teaches social graces and utilizes motor skills It is an athletic activity ty so it is good for your health she saidI saidI saidI said I crack jokes I lighten the mood oo rby telling stories and I demonstrate steps that are amplified and make it funny to help people relax Genovesi said She said that people should not feel intimated intimated intimated inti inti- mated because she tries to tomake tomake tomake make the entire dance experience ence at swing club a welcome one for everybody I try to give the students patterns that they do nationally So you can cango cango cango go from Salt Lake to Phoenix to Denver and fit right in because they are doing the same stuff she said When I first started dancing dancing dancing ing it was frustrating but as soon as you start figuring things out it starts to click You just get addicted to it said Woolston Swing Club is open to anyone anyone anyone any any- one and meets every Wednesday at 7 pm p.m. in the Student Center on the Redwood Campus Lessons are offered at 7 pm p.m. and open dance runs from 8 10 pm p.m. Admission is 2 for non- non members For more information information tion email or call |
