Show The negative side of Bowl Championship in Football I Robyn Hansen I Contributing t College football players know a kind of passion that many of us will never know They are fully committed to being the best they can be everyday on and off the field Many players practice for six or more hours a day between weightlifting and running plays on the field football teams all have the same goal in hi their college careers to be the national champions But with the present Bowl Championship Series many of these players will never even have the chance to play in any major bowl and will never know what it feels like to be the national champion t H even if their team could bethe be bethe bethe the best The football 2005 2006 Season will be held just as the years prior and will end with the championship championship championship champi champi- bowls The was created to provide a national champion in college football but the way in which the system was created created created creat creat- ed basically leaves 54 teams out of ever even getting the chance to play in hi the tournament The system system system tem is arranged in a slot tem There are a total of eight slots for teams to compete compete compete com com- pete in the bowl games Six of the eight slots are guaranteed guaranteed guaranteed guaran guaran- teed to the 62 institutions inthe in inthe inthe the group Coach LaVell Edwards of BYU experienced first hand how unfair the system is In 1991 BYU was ranked in inthe inthe inthe the nation but because of the slot system they never even got a smell of a championship championship championship cham cham- game While participating in bowl games the teams receive millions of dollars made by T. T TV networks and sales made from the community community community in which the bowl was held Although it wouldn't be f fair ir to give non teams the money made from bowls they did not participate participate participate pate in in it is completely unfair to o not give them h m the chan chance e to earn money money for schools enjoyed million million million mil mil- lion in revenues while the non-member non schools received only 5 million With this major difference in profits non schools have lower athletic budgets With low athletic budgets schools suffer from inferior athletic facilities and rising deficits Without the facilities facilities facilities ties to properly train a football football football foot foot- ball team their talent will move to the teams that can afford personal trainers for all of their players and new equipment to help them Cont Cant on Page 7 I Cont from Page 6 further advance their talents Non schools are disadvantaged disadvantaged disadvantaged in recruiting top athletes retaining a coaching coaching coaching coach coach- ing staff and maintaining a strong student fan base If you are a top high school athlete being heavily recruited recruit recruit- ed cd by top schools and top non schools the obvious choice is to benefit the thc self and go to a school where you would have a chance to be a national champion schools can offer more pay to coaches and better living for the student student stu stu- i dent athletes Also non schools do not have as strong of a fan base as schools because following a a national champion is much more cause for celebration than following a team that has a small chance of making making making mak mak- ing it to any bowl at all |
