Show Student Fee Debate Are student fees equitable Christian Leikam Campus Reporter Are student fees equitable This question was hung up on the walls and handed out in flyers the past couple weeks at Salt Lake Community College This question d A d A t ts t tn tt da U stu LUU en lu LV o a en a u debate on the subject held Wednesday Oct 28 Student Fees are the charges students' students are expected to pay on top of tuition These charges do not include the cost of books or parking permits Equitable ble doesn't necessarily mean that the money is dispersed equally to each possible recipient The question Are student fees equitable asks whether the way the money is used is fair to every student For students' students with a class load of 12 to 18 credit h hours urs student fees will be on top of 1188 tuition For some students like Mallory Bell an year old recent high school graduate who paid for school on her own this money was hard to come by Bell had gotten together the money sh she needed e ded for tuition and didn't know about student fees When she registered But when she saw the charge for student fees she had to ask for help from family to cover the extra cost Its ts t's frustrating that its it's required Bell said I guess if it was less it wouldn't be besuch besuch besuch such a big deal At the debate over whether student fees are equitable neither side tried to make the case that student fees are too high The debate was more about how well Vell the funds are arc used The con was the side arguing that student fees are not equitable while the pro argued that student fees are dispensed in a way that benefits the student body as much as possible Among other subjects the sports programs at were also a topic of debate Both sides of the debate said that the sports ro am receives a 1 c sizable P lV P HUU amount of the student fee money but they differed on whether this equitable or not The pros pro's argument was that putting money into the sports programs was like an investment and that if the sports teams win that brings in money from donors and other sources which can then be reinvested into the school The cons con's argument was that not every student is involved in the sports programs They argued that for the money to be used in inan inan inan an equitable way it should be concentrated into anarea an anarea anarea area of the school that more students take part in Tevita Heimuli 24 a aSocial aSocial aSocial Social Work major who wasat was wasat wasat at the debate said he came cameto cameto cameto to learn about the process At first I was siding with the con Heimuli said This broadened my perspective You cant can't really please everybody The debate judges ruled in favor of the pros pro's argument which was that the fees are equitable Heimuli agreed Its fair on my end that's my personal opinion Heimuli said I dont don't know how everybody else feels feels said Heimuli noting that not everybody would agree with him One of the debate judges was Marci Thorne Thome 20 a Health Science major Thome Thorne said that both sides made good points but one of the reasons the pro won wonis wonis wonis is that they used evidence i instead of opinion Thorne Thome points out that the Health Clinic Option at which offers offers' cheap flu shots and free physical exams for students who dont don't feel well is an important service paid for forby forby forby by student fees Theres always room for improvement Thome said of student fees Ill never say they're perfect |
