Show wowed The Mentalist sf l v j Christian Leikam Campus ampus Reporter When you hear the word Mentalist what image pops int into your head Christopher Carter didn't wear weara a cloak top hat white gloves or a large mustache during his show at Salt Lake Community College on Thursday Oct 15 He didn't dress like Criss Criss Cris Angel either He did however fill the room with astounded gasps Students were drawn to the Student Event Center enter at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus C by bright blue string lights and loud salsa music Anna Shields a 17 year-old year psychology major waited for the show to start Im really excited for forit forit forit it Shields said as the salsa music blasted before the show started Carter doesn't claim to possess possess' supernatural powers Carter remarked that he just likes messing with peoples people's minds The act is mostly based on body language a language Carter at the age of eight realized he could speak better than most My initial interest t was traditional magic tricks Carter said in an interview after the show When Carter was eight years old he sat satin satin satin in on a game of poker with his uncle and his uncles uncle's friends Carter said he could pick up on subtle ticks or tells that the players would do when they were bluffing Carters Carter's ability to gain information nonverbally nonverbally nonverbally non non- verbally is a major staple in his act The opening part of Carters Carter's act reflects this skill Cart Carter r has an audience member select a card at random from a full deck eck eckof of cards Carter doesn't know what the card is buthe buthe but buthe he quickly begins listing different possibilities until he sees a verbal non-verbal signal that he has guessed the card According to Carter this part was just a warm up For the next part of the act Carter had two audience members come upon upon up upon on stage to assist him First he had a silver dollar duct taped to each of his eyes then a blindfold was put on top of that then more duct tape over the blindfold From there he had three random objects handed up to the stage and made sure nobody gave him any clues as to what they were By simply holding his his his' hand up over the objects and not even touching them Carter accurately guessed on his first try what they were Not only did Carter ac accurately guess what had been handed up onto the stage he was able to incorporate humor into his guesses Carter kept the blinding apparatus on for the next part of the act Slips of paper were handed out to every audience member upon which they wrote different types of information By simply holding the cards in his hand Carter was able to accurately state information about those who wrote o othe on the cards such as phone phon numbers names jobs and other things the audience wouldn't expect him to know Carter said he tosses out outguesseS outguesseS' outguesses outguesses outguesses' guesses guesses' some of which are just lucky Why on earth said did I say that Carter he often asks himself as ashe ashe ashe he throws out his guesses which on Thursday had an amazing rate of accuracy Actual reality and perceived reality dont don't always align said Carter e explaining that he uses psychologically based illusions to manipulate perception Carter also risked getting his hand punctured by a staple gun Carter u used ed edmind mind control to safely have the only empty staple gun pressed up against his hand For the the fin finale le C Carter from the had two women audience hold two tube- tube shaped light bulbs On his command both the lights lit up in the women's hands without any electrical source The bulbs suddenly shut off when he instructed them to close their eyes After the show a line of audience members formed around the stage for autographs information and to compliment Carter for astounding them According to Carter this type of success is pretty typical Carter has done shows in all fifty states mainly for colleges and corporate events I 1 always say this is the closest thing to actually going to see remarked Carter after the show |
