Show The Program Rebecca DaBell Contributing Writer When going into college the pressure is on to pick picka a career There are many programs to pick from at Salt Lake Community College Becoming an interpreter is one option offers one of the only interpreting programs in the Salt Lake Valley Known more commonly as the program obtaining this degree takes between two to three years attending full time Entering the program the student will learn the factors of interpreting what challenges she he will face and learn how to hold and process the information into or interpreting says Eric Lynn the Lab Coordinator at The student will also study the linguistics of and richness of Deaf culture Before entering the program students have completed ASLI 1010 and 1020 with a B or higher have a 15 or higher on the Math portion of the ACT and a 20 or higher on the Reading portion of the ACT They must also pass COMM 1020 or THE THEA A 1033 Career outlook for interpreters has projected growth in the next few years because of a new law that has been passed The law states that everywhere a deaf person is in a government setting an interpreter has to be there as well Interpreters work in every field but the most common is in educational settings Toward the end of the program the student will have the opportunity to practice interpreting with a mentor and will become comfortable working with witha a variety of people- people both deaf and hearing says Lynn The ability to task multi-task is a necessary skill and also will have increased knowledge of vocabulary or strong verbal and written English skills If students already have experience in they have the option to test out of the classes Similarly if students already have experience in acting they can appeal to opt out of taking the theater portion The interpreting program prepares students to take the Utah State Interpreters Interpreter's Certification Test to be able to work as asan asan asan an interpreter For more information visit http edu as |
