Show The road to cinematic excellence J Jenna CODa Neilson Contributing Writer Once a student and classmate now Hollywood royalty This fantasy could very well turn into nto reality someday The filmmakers at are focused on making this vision of the future an actuality but before they can even begin to imagine receiving millions of dollars to fund their major motion pictures or daydream of claiming their Oscars they must first appease a much more localized crowd This crowd is comprised of a daunting yet familiar group of people better known as fellow students Getting approval from classmates is just one step clos closer r to achieving greatness Another hurdle these filmmakers must overturn is that of impressing local handpicked judges chosen to critique and judge their films This cinematic judgment will occur at Annual Film Festival which will be held on the evenings of March 30 and 31 at the Taylorsville Redwood Student Center Student Life and Leadership committee hosts this film festival with a panel of three judges comprised of two film industry connoisseurs and a aluck luck lucky specially se selected student These judges critique the movies based on filming techniques in which they award three overall prizes in additional to a prize for each genre One final award is bestowed choice so the viewers h have ve the chance to vote for their favorite film The awards may not be karat 24 gold plated men named Oscar but do come in the appealing form of cold hard cash the film department to to the festival but submissions are not limited to those students alone However the regulations imposed upon submissions have barred many students from entering their w work rk Film student Beau Gourley said There areso areso are areso so many regulations that it takes away from the creative ability to tell a st story ry These regulations include a maximum PG 13 rating and a time confinement of two to 20 minutes Last semesters semester's winner Tony Henrichsen said he is not submitting this semester because he feels that editing his film will alter the inherent personalities of the characters in his movie On the other hand he encourages all students to enter because Road to excellence Continued on Oil Road to Y excellence Continued from A I 1 it is a fun and worthwhile experience Even if one is not in the film department the lure of may be enticing enough to enter a film into the festival The appropriate entry forms as aswell aswell aswell well as rules and regulations can be found at the Fine Arts Art's Lectures li link k at SLL Movie lovers who lacking either the talent or the time timeto to make a film may still participate in this event Those who attend the free screenings later this month will have the chance to vote for their favorite films as well as see the awards ceremony The winners willbe will willbe willbe be awarded at the close of the screening upon which will be closer they one step v to to the Aw Yes it is unlikely that thata a filmmaker will willever 4 ever receive the Academy Award for Best Director but unlikely is definitely not the same as impossible In fact Aaron Eckhart who played Two-Face Two in The Dark Knight graduated from Brigham Young University so the Utah link to cinematic cinematic- excellence is undeniably tangible |
