Daniels was recently selected to attend the American Indian Journalism Institute AIJI AU I in South Dakota Daniels was nominated by his older brother Mark to attend the journalism boot camp that focuses on diversity diversity diversity diver diver- sity and placing Native journalist journalist journalist jour jour- into the journalism world All of Daniels' Daniels expenses will be paid by the AIJI including his room and food I feel very honored to be selected and feel that it comes at a great time not only for my education but for bringing awareness and attention to Native communities communities communities said Daniels in an e- e mail The AIJI is a joint function function function tion of of- the University of of- of South Dakota and the Freedom Forum held annually annually annu annu- annually ally on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion South Dakota The Freedom Forum is as stated online a nonpartisan foundation promoting employment diversity in Americas America's newsrooms willfully willfully will willfully fully fund and run the annual annual annual annu annu- al academic journalism program program program pro pro- gram for about 25 Native American college students One of their goals is to promote promote pro pro- promote mote journalism through teaching conferences scholarships and intern intern- ships Some of the requirements of the program included enrollment in a college and completion of a freshman year The chosen students also must be a tribal member or have the ability to prove lineage While students were able to nominate themselves the director of the AIJI Jack Marsh suggests that students be nominated just as Daniels wasI was I 1 want to thank my big bi- bi brother i M Maik having fk for f having faith in me and for See Daniels continued on page 4 Daniels continued from front fronting fronting fronting ing me for the AIJI program said Daniels I would also like to thank my professor Nick Burns Bums for his journalism insight know-how's know and moti moti- Following the nearly three week program Daniels will have the opportunity to complete complete complete com com- a five week internship with a daily newspaper The five week internship will take place throughout the month of July According to the Freedom Forum the program has been set up because Native American students do not consider consider consider con con- sider journalism when choosing choosing choosing choos choos- ing a career The intent is to teach the students about journalism journalism journalism jour jour- in hopes they consider it as a career in the future Students who successfully complete the program earn four college credit hours and a scholarship stipend In 2002 the program gathered gathered gath gath- ered 28 students from 20 different different dif dif- dif dif- ferent tribes The students came from 16 states and one from Canada the students came from 24 colleges |
